28-30 Stevens brass problems
May 3rd, 2016 at 3:12pm
Print Post
I'm having trouble with my brass.  Am breach seating and after a few shots the brass wrinkles at the mouth and up to a third of the way back. Its ruined. It's a CPA barrel and RMC brass.  Mostly I'm using 8.x grains of #9.  Tried annealing, but no better.

I like the .28 caliber, but would go with a shorter case if I had to do it over again.

Suggestions are welcomed.

Expand the case mouth so that it rubs on the chamber when you seat the case.

Pressure is getting around the case mouth and that is what causes the partial collapse.

Measure your case neck thickness. I have some RMC 32/20's the case neck is .020 on them. That is WAY to thick to expand and seal the case neck against the chamber neck.

If yours are more than .012, turn the necks, no thicker than .010. That is the thickness of commercial 3/30/32/40 brass.

With the case annealed and that thickness, it should seal it and keep them from colapsing. Keep in mind that even with 32/40's, the neck will still colapse sometimes, if the pressure isn't high enough to seal, even when using BP.

When all else fails, try a floral foam wad at the case mouth.

Try adjusting your bullet seating depth as it will often times eliminate your current issue. I am not sure if will help with your RMC cases but it works quite well with bertram cases etc. A friend was loosing allot of 25-21 cases in short order, I now have the rifle made an adjustment and I haven't lost a single case to date after multipe firings. The Brass being used is both the Bertram and the RMC. I shoot with a single case so I have been using both to see if one provides better results on the target than the other. Bottom line is it cured
the problem and it might be worth a try.

Typicaly if you try expand the mouth of a RMC case it will split, just a heads up so becareful if you are going to give it a try. The brass used is not the same as factory and isn't as forgiving.

Exactly why my 28-30 Stevens barrel is now a 28-35SS. I should have gone that way in the beginning as I had the 28-35SS reamer but wanted to stay traditional. I lost 1.5" of barrel and spent a few hours on the lathe, but it all turned out fine.

I know a lot of shooters have no trouble with the 28-30 Stevens. Mine shot extremely well but I went through brass at an alarming rate, no matter what I tried.

When I started thinking about  a .28, I eliminated 28-30 as soon as I saw that long shinny case.  Availability sealed the deal.  Same reasons my .25 is a Hornet   Shocked

I used to have that problem with a 38-55. I would bell the case mouth to get a tight seal on the chamber. Charlie Dell told me how to do it a different way. Drop your load put a wad at the case mouth and tip the case mouth down and tap it lightly to orient all the powder to the mouth end of the case. You may have to add powder to get back up to the proper velocity. This worked well with my 38-55 that long skinny 28-30 case may be a different story or you may have to go with a magnum primer either way try it it works.

Just adding a foam wad cured my 25 Hornet as well as another shooter's case collapsing.  It happened ab out every other shot.

Bob the 25Hornet is an interesting choice, extremly accurate and rarely seen. Dave Purcell has been extremely successful with it over the years as have a few others.

Didn't mean to get off track it just caught my interest as I recently chambered a couple of barrels for it and it is not mentioned often.

Amen Bob and an excellent choice! If you ever get a chance to pickup some 22 Hornet PRVI unprimed Brass jump on it as it is far superior to the WW and or Rem. Graph and Sons was / is the place to get it.

They are out, guess I'll have to shoot what I have for now.
