During the last couple of weeks I've been reforming my old W-W 38-55 brass (which at 2.08" just happens to be too short for original 38-55 chambers) to 32-40 and the resized length has come out perfect - no need to trim any of 200 cases done so far.  Then I reloaded *-* 2.125" brass in the correct length for my four old 38-55's.

Someone with the authority to do so should make an "Important Topic" of the "Where's the .32-40 brass" thread.

I volunteer to write a summary of the topic.

how many cases does one need? i used one case for 1007 shots before the neck split. unbelievable that one case could bring $5. like the thread says it can be made from 30-30 and 38-55. i have made it from 32 special which has been dirt cheap. i found 4 boxes new brass at a gun show for $10 box. anneal first then it is easy to form

Yeah, why such a huge need for brass?  Is there that many new 32-40 shooters out there?  I used one case last weekend for about a hundred bullets fired.

Joe, You shoot enough to cause a 32-40 shortage breach seating with a single case.  They don't last forever  Cheesy Grin

Had a good friend walk over to me at a match. He tipped over a 32-40 case and the primer fell out. Then he said “Cheap brass I only got three years out of that case”. Then we both had a good laugh. Seriously I keep a dozen cases in my rifle kit I don’t think I’ll live long enough to use them up.

Maybe the hoarders that bought the cases @ $4.05 to $5 need that many because they're waiting to drive the price up to $10 hoping to sell then. Cheesy

Well I know it seems like those of us that bought quantities of new 32-40 and 38-55 Brass were or are greedy. But I suspect a lot of you weren't around when there was none to be had. I bought Canadian loaded 32-40 and 38-55 just to have Brass to shoot during the 60s era. The Bullets were very basic and I think I still have all the pulled bullets from that stuff. When Winchester announced that 38-55 was now available I purchased 1500 rounds then found it was short #$&*&$@ and Winchester refused to consider making it good. Then 32-40 showed up correct length and I have over the years purchased some significant quantities, but not 1500 rds. Like many others here I have found that Breech seating and not sizing will make Brass last indefinitely. I have ruined more Brass by mishandling than by shooting. And I have never considered selling any of it. I have though given some away to local friends who have come into the Single Shot game so they could have enough to get going while they found enough to satisfy their needs. Well just my thoughts on this. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

I plan to form 32-40 and was going to use the 2.125" and trim but I see posts that indicate the 2.080 lengthen properly and one that said it needed squaring up so they were 0.010" short. So, before I order 250 pcs of 2.080 Starline 2.080" 38-55s can anyone confirm that they come close enough to 2.130 32-40 since my intent is to develop a fixed loading?

Thank you,
Charles

I used 20 Starline 38-55 2.125" cases to reform to 32-40.  They came out fine but were considerably too long - about 3/32" so.  Had to trim all of them, which is a pain on the palm with a manual case trimmer.

I then reformed W-W 2.08" brass and they all came out just right.  I did initially run some of them through the trimmer that was previously set for the 2.125" brass and the cutting edge of the trimmer just barely made contact with the open neck of the reformed brass.  It wasn't even enough contact to act as a deburring tool.

I have two 32-40s and could not find the brass but I did have a few boxes of 32 Special ammo. I pulled the bullets, dumped the powder and resized the cases in the 32-40 sizer. Since the 32 Special uses the same diameter bullet there was no need to expand the case mouth. The cases are a little short but it requires much less effort and doesn't waste a 38-55 case.

Another option mentioned is 30-30 brass and its available used from Ken's Brass and other used brass dealers:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

It's $14 per 50 plus shipping.  I bought 4 or 5 bags of it and had no problem sizing it to 32-40 other than a few mistakes with the press.  The crimp line never completely disappears but it doesn't seem to hurt these low pressure loads.  I just used my regular reloading dies which never get used anyway and some case lube.

Lot's of options.  I have not yet gone the bench reloading route but will.
