I've got a lot of brass for my .32-40. Old, new, formed from whatever, or factory original.
Makes no difference to me or my rifle if it's long or short- it all shoot just the same. At least with smokeless. I breech seat or load fixed with the cases I load up- don't even bother to choose. I do, however keep it sorted by identical batches.
In a situation where the lubed case was carried afield, maybe the longer one is preferred to protect the lube better, but in a single shot at the range, what's everybody worried over?

So you are concerned about short, etc cases?
How about these that I picked from an estate
of lifelong shooter. Two full boxes of old WRA,UMC
S.A.Co, loaded in 1972 with 9 gr Dupont #75.
Shows how far gone these cases were, but still in use.
Second pic--I got lucky, also with the above:
two full boxes of NEW WRA 32-40s

Got these at a local show, 60 rounds of virgin WW 32-40 at .75 each.  A bag of unopened 38-55 brass for $25.00.  I'm set. Cool

I keep a list of dies on my reloading supply cabinet. One set rcbs cowboy 3 die set in 32-40 and a rcbs 32-40 case forming die. My stash of 32-40 brass is exactly 20 Canadian CIL 32-40 and 20 REN-UMC 32-40. And one bag of 50 WW 38-55 brass. Think I got it covered except I don't have a 32-40 caliber firearm. Bought the dies as a what if I did get one. Frank

That's how I ended up with a 30-30 Wesson!

Cat_Whisperer, yep great minds do tend to think alike.I've got dies from guns I no longer own, die sets I once picked up when a major gun shop went out of business and occasional buys on the net. Frank

Unless you are obsessed with headstamps use WW 38-55 brass . It is 2.080 but will stretch as you size it down. I use Imperial sizing die way and have always had enough to trim a little to square up the mouth.
