Looking for 38-55 bullet suggestions

Story:
Uberti DST HW 38-55 (Will be checking actual dimensions but for arguments sake let's go with the following:)
1) 1:18, 0.382 groove, .370
2) Intent is to BS for 200yd BR
3) & Fixed for 200yd OH
4) Primarily smokeless (4759) w/o wad if possible.
5) 250gr OK, 300gr max. and prefer lower recoil (32-40 w/200gr is not a problem for me I just worry that 300gr may be a lot as I age).

My first guess was Acurate molds 38-300J, 1st band 0.370, rest 0.383

And, is it better to get a two cavity or is a one cavity better for consistancy (I would mark cavities to sort A from B)

Thank you,
Charles

I have the same setup as you and I went with the 285B.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) So far it shoots very well with 5744.    I prefer single cavity molds for rifles.  YMMV.

PS I know where you're coming from on the recoil.  If you can keep your trunk erect instead of leaning into the shot off the bench it sure helps.  I also use a Shooters Friend pad.

Also you mentioned using a wad which is mostly a no for smokeless.  Its a good way to get a ringed barrell or worse.

The Hoch as sold by CPA for breech seating is also an excellent choice. Stats are on thier web site.

Dave, Are you using a standard factory chamber or is it throated to get more care capacity?

In my Uberti for 200 meter fixed I ended up with the NEI 379-245-GC. The mould I found also casts a 315 grain pointy bullet but the 245 shot better. NEI also makes a copy of the Lyman 375272 Hudson which they list as 380-320 Lyman.

Charles here is a 200yd. target I shot with the Hoch bullet I mentioned earlier. The bullet shot consistently extremely well 247's and up were the norm. in practice outings. The recoil was not real bad but more than my current health can take and I no longer shoot it. I have never shot any fixed so I can't be of any help with that part of your question.

The rifle was a CPA Schuetzen Junior / 52 with a 15 twist Douglas XX barrel.
Bullet Hoch 310-376
Alloy 30-1
Lube Dell59C
Powder 17.1grs. 300MP
Primers Winchester Large Rifle Magnum
Breech Seated

I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you for the input. I am guessing it will take two separate bullet designs (BS and Fixed). The problem with CPA's is the stock size I have a 295gr Ron Long but it is 0.375 (I may try to open up the last few driving bands to .383 since I have no need for .375). I just want to avoid the experimenting $ trap just to find there is an old standby design that works for 95% of the guns out there. And yes I am looking for something with the capability to be at least capable of 245's (245's would be the goal for bench and a 240 capability for the fixed). Just got an 8lb of 300MP so I am going to try that new fangled stuff.

I apologize for not realizing the need for a larger bullet Charles and I sold my mould or I would have tried to open it up for you try.
The 38-55 is more than capable to achieve 245's and easily beyond once you find what it likes breech seated. It is one of those user friendly inhearently accurate cartridge designs like the 33-47, 32-40 and 28-30 that do not require an over abundace of tender loving frustration as they just simply want to shoot all the time.

I wish you the best and only wish I could be of more help.
