Jim Feren told me he beat Hudsons record seven times. Hope I remember that correct.

Augie Westerguard or his father might have been the first long before Ferens time if I remember correctly.

The bottom of the picture I have of Hudson's target says "Dr. Hudson used a 12 lb ballard rifle.  Iron sights, aperature and globe and no palm rest."

Bottom of what picture/target? Assuming he shot ten ten shot targets?

It is a picture of a compilation of the targets he shot.  They must have overlayed each of the ten targets and drew the holes onto a master target.  If I can figure it out, I will post a picture.  PM me a email and I will send you a scanned copy of it.  It is pretty neat.  There is also a copy of the score sheet.  It has the scores on a grid and a bunch of handwritten notes that are hard to read.

How much of and advantage is the  quick lock time of a Miller over a Ballard or Hepburn?

I experimented a little and concluded my BSA Martini 22 gave me a 1/2 to 1 point advantage over my Ballard 22 shooting 100 yd offhand on the ASSRA target  Huh

When I laid down my Hiwall and started using the Hoch, my shots were high left or high right. Just where I would have pulled the trigger with my hiwall. My Highest OH scores are with slow lock time rifles. Hiwall and lowall. Shooters adapt.

Cody, I am not aware of any 250s shot by Jack or Steve. If they had, I'm sure we would have read about it somewhere.

The Butte Gun Club allows smokeless in monthly matches. BP is required in the Jim Gier Memorial and John Taylor Memorial matches.

      Joe.

Joe I asked SPG on the WSU forum about black powder 250's.  He's shot at least one from what I remember, but in practice, not in a match.

I remember that discussion. His answer seemed to vague to be considered a real answer and WSU has no documented offical records that I know of.

Finally, finally found the BPCRN featuring Jack Odors 247.  2006 issue #55.

The cover shows the target and equipment. # 6 Ballard. Offset iron sights for using left eye. Muzzle rest very close to the forestock.

I had a chance to visit with Jack tonight.  I always enjoy it, what a good friend.  He told me tonight that he doesn't think anyone has shot a 250 with straight black powder in a match.  He said he himself has not done it even in practice.  After a bit of visiting, he said "you know, I think I remember hearing Carl Hagler did it once, but I am not sure."

I asked Jack why has no one done it, and he insisted that it is just because nobody has really tried.  He said if he really put his mind to it and spent a couple days working at it, it would be no problem.  He insists that the only difference is the fouling control and cleanup and that there is really no big trick to it. It is just more convenient to shoot smokeless.  Anyway, I have a hundred Rocky Mountain Cartridge everlasting brass for my 32-40 and I think I will start seeing if I can do it.  Maybe it will make bench shooting a little more interesting Grin Grin
hope this helps, Cody

I can assure you it will be interesting, also frustrating. I look forward to seeing how you go with it.
Mike.
The change to smokeless just made things a whole lot easier, as for fouling control all you need is one damp patch and one dry, hardly rocket science, brass clean up, wash cases and into the tumbler or ultrasonic cleaner, hardly a big deal.
I can't imagine how many choices are out there in the way of suitable smokeless powder, but there ain't many when it comes to black.

Cody I imagine that a lack of serious numbers of people trying is part of it.  Another part might be that a lot of the smokeless shooters have benchrest while most shooting blackpowder are shooting with traditional stocks.

I keep meaning to put some serious effort into it.  I have a couple of rifles that should be as accurate as any, but I keep getting "distracted" by BPTR.
