There are no group matches shot with iron sights that I know of but, a score of 247, as Jack Odor shot, will have to be under 3.0" (24 ring is 3"), probably closer to 2.0 - 2.25".

If anyone has a picture of the Odor target, I'd be happy to scale it.

Frank

Some of the guys shot our group match at TRR with BP.  Either John or Marv won it again the Smokeless crowd at least once.  I'll go through the results later tonginhg and see what it was measured at.

Bob,

I looked at some back results and John Schauf shot a 1.343" 5 shot group with BP at the fall 2012 TR&R match.  That was only good enough for 3rd.  Simon Smith shot a .516 and Gary Miller shot a .686.  They were not shooting BP though.  You going to shoot John's 600 yd match on May 10th at Paul Bunyan?

John Schauf's would have been BP, he never shot anything but at TRR.  Was Simon's 5 or 10 shots, We used to alternate back and forth  spring and fall.  I don't think he ever shot anything but BP either. He only shot there a couple times.  I remember some one with a really good group beating the smokeless boys with BP.  If John was 3rd, it must  have been Simon.

I doubt if I shoot the 600.  I need to get a 40-65 scoped and shooting and see if the recoil triggers a migraine? After a decade of nearly 24/7, I'm a bit cautions  Grin

I emailed him to see what he shot.  I'm sure he shot those matches with BP.

Simon shot that group with Chuck's rifle, probably his Hoch, definitely with smokeless.

John Schauf's  1.343" 5 shot group with BP at the fall 2012 TR&R match is less than MOA.

All of this is a little “apples and oranges” as we have no consistency. Over the years the rules have changed black powder got worse optics got better and equipment became more consistent. Add to that, that in most matches with the exception of the WSU powder choice was optional. There are a couple of black powder only  matches in the ASSRA but if I remember correctly they are all score matches.

Just to make sure I have got this completely clear, John Schauf's 1.343"group was definitely shot at 200 yds using black powder and iron sights, correct ?.
Mike.
Just checking.

Didn't Doc Hudson shoot some score that hasn't been beat yet, back in the day??

Mike,

You are correct.  John has only ever shot BP at the Tacoma matches and never with scope.  I believe he was using a CPA in 40-65.

100 shot offhand was beat by Jim Ferren (Sic?) twice.

There is some argument as to whether the score has truly been beat.  Multiple people, both ISSA and ASSRA have shot scores higher than the 2301, but many don't believe it was under the same rules.  I am not trying to start a fight, just pointing out that not everybody agrees.
take care, Cody

This is a lot like asking who the best boxer of all time was or who was best baseball team of all time. Technology changes and creates opportunities. There still has to be someone who can see those opportunities’ and has the talent to take advantage of them.
In bench rest for example, when I first joined it was accepted fact that you could only make good scores with traditional flat pointed bullets. At that time also you could count the 250s on one hand and Rowland’s 10 shot group had never been beaten. Now we use spitzer bullets, small cartridges, bench rest stocks and 250s while not commonplace are not rare either. Rowland’s group has been beaten at least three times that I know of.
