Im probably the cause of this thread. Recently acquired my second Browning 40/65. Shot it on Friday to get 100 and 200 sight settings. Shot in comp on Saturday 13 shots 10 to count at both distances. Shot a very rough 100 at 100m Then shot the target below at 200m. 10 shots only marked at 100.2. A 6 o'clock breeze with left and right shifts at about 15 degrees. Tricky.
I used the exact same load as I do in the other Browning.
Load is 64.5 grains of Wano 2P, Muron Russian lr primer and a PJ tapered money bullet. No scope no nitro (we don't even shoot duplex)

Jack Oder shot a 247 with straight BP at 200 yards. Think he used iron sights, not sure. Was written up in BP News I think.
The Roland group was shot with smokeless? Muzzle loaded?
I was there when Pinney shot his 250 with iron sights. All had a good time that day when TR&R was going strong in Schuetzen matches.

Rowland's 10-shot, .722 group was shot with a duplex load of DuPont No.1 smokeless as priming charge, the rest of the case filled with Hazard's FG black. His Pope Ballard was muzzle loaded. That load is according to one source I have come across that I think is authoritative (
it is not however the only version of what load Rowland used
).
That is also the same suggested duplex load in Pope's 1899 catalog for his muzzle loading barrels. Pope further expanded his suggested loads by including the same priming charge, using FG King's Semi-Smokeless as an alternative to black.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Pardon my ignorance but I thought the 200 yd Iron sight target was black, I would have thought it hard to see a red target clearly with aperture sights.
Just to make it perfectly clear for the benefit of Macca Mr Pinney shot a 250 at 200 yds using black powder and iron sights, correct .
Thanks for all the replys.

Bev used a Miller rifle with a Ron Smith barrel equipped with Anschutz sights.
He used smokeless powder. .32 MS or RKS shell.
I think Jack Oder has the highest score with his 247, using straight black powder. 32-40 Ballard caliber.

The Black targets are easier to see with Irons...but, at least for me, I can't see the holes in the black at 200...

Mike, the reason we are giving you scores is because we use that red German 25-ring target. The white center or 25 ring is 1.5 inches at 200 yards.

Thank you all again, I'm finally getting somewhere at last. What I probably should have asked was what was the best ever group shot with black powder, not the highest score. I thought I had made the black powder bit clear but it seems to have caused a little confusion. A bit like bench rest really where only the group is important, not if you get it in the middle or not. For the purpose of clarification I will list the criteria again.
# 1 Black Powder only, no duplex loads.
# 2 Shot off the bench.
# 3 Group
# 4 Apeture sights.
Hopefully this makes my question abundantly clear.
Mike.

I'm not aware of any official records to answer your question, Mick. Might be why the thread drifts.
We tried.

There are no group matches shot with iron sights that I know of but, a score of 247, as Jack Odor shot, will have to be under 3.0" (24 ring is 3"), probably closer to 2.0 - 2.25".
If anyone has a picture of the Odor target, I'd be happy to scale it.
Frank

Mike if you contact Steve Garbe on the WSU forum he might be able to answer your question. He was very interested in the smallest blackpowder group. At one time he wanted to track them by posting them in the Black Powder Cartridge News.
I'd love to see Jack Odor's target.

Mike here is one of my best straight black powder targets. It was shot at 223 yards. There are 12 shots ( including the first shot down a clean bore ). Nine of them went into under 2" center to center, but there were a couple of flyers too unfortunately.
