Would anybody know what was the best target ever shot with black powder at 200 yds in the bench rest class using aperture sights.

In the words of a former US president, it kind of depends on what the meaning of the word
is
,
is
:
-By best target, do you mean group or score
-Shot in competition or not
-Whose class, ASSRA, ISSA
-Shot using machine rest or sand bag rests
-With a rifle having period iron sights or modern click adjustment iron sights
Not trying to rain on your parade but all those factors result in different meanings of
best target
.

Some of the old-timers were cagy. You look in shooting and fishing and see an incredible group. As you read the article you figure out that it was done on a machine rest. I still don’t know if Rowland’s group was shot with a machine rest or off bags it is never mentioned.

Wasn't Rowlands target shot with a scope?
Are you talking about the "Golden Age" or modern? I'm assuming your asking about the score on the 25 ring target?

Rowland used a Pope double rest to shoot his famous .722", 10-shot group at 200 yards. He used his 32-40 Pope Ballard with a scope. If you have access to a photo of that target, his hand-written notes have interesting details about shooting the group.
I have read varying versions of his exact load but written on the target is Leopold Lube. A photo of that group was published in
Shooting and Fishing
in a July (as I recall) 1901 issue.

It thought that group was shot over the course of many hours or even a few days. Just waiting for the right conditions for each shot. Of course I may be remembering that completely wrong.

You may well be remembering correctly. Unfortunately, there are a number of varying stories about that target floating around. Some stories are fact based, others are total fiction.
CW Rowland's note on the target reads:
Shot May 16, 1901
Same goes for the exact load used. Load was most likely a duplex but again, stories vary.

I don't know about black powder - not sure if anyone has kept track - but I do know that Schuetzenbob has shot a 249-9 in competition at Raton with smokeless and I believe that Bev Pinney has shot a 250.

Doug Gazaway of Gainsville, GA shot a 5 shot group of .831" in a 20 minute time period at a Pedersoli "5 at 200" side match at the Black Powder Cartridge Nationals five or six years ago. He was shooting a Paul Jones 40 Cal. Creedmoor in a Browning with iron sights. I might add, it was not a calm day................Jim

If you are taking Iron Sights? I was there when Bev did it with his 32 Miller at Tacoma. I think that may have been the first one, but I'm not sure. I belive that was an ASSRA match After the NW Regional moved to Sherwood or Spokane.

Thanks for all the answers, based on Randy's questions I will refine my original question.
Best group shot at 200 yds off a sandbag rest using modern aperture sights such as MVA or Baldwin, Hoke, whatever.
Score is not important.
My reason for my question is that in a discussion with a friend I said that that you guys in America were shooting much better groups than we were, to which he replied that the reason for that was because most of you use smokeless powder to do it, whereas here all our competitions are with the more traditional black powder and even duplex loads are not allowed.
Hope this clarifies my original question.
Mike.

This is an ISB 250 at 200 yards, but it's with smokeless powder.
