Bob,
I drill my sprue hole to .098 (#40 drill). the sprue cuts much easiler at that size, too.

Frank

Thanks, I'm sure mine are bigger.  Standard from the makers.

I don't remember exactly but I think the hole diameter in the plate on the mold is around .140 the plate I am having made will be .125 give or take a bit.

I made my own replacement sprue plates from 3/16" ground 0-1.  block cavity was indicated concentric in Bridgeport mill, plate installed, drilled & c'sink machined in bench lathe using a fixture.  That said..in some of the early Ideal handbooks, there is shown a method of obtaining a near perfect base..opening the plate until only a small cresant of sprue plate hole is over cavity.  Mr. Barlow even had instructions on drilling for another stop pin for repeatability.  I have tried this little trick..and bases do indeed come out looking very close to a nose-pour base.  I have shot these in various  calibers from .22 Hornet up thru the .40's..and though I don't own benchrest grade rifles, I can't verify for certain if accuracy is better or worse.  That sprue hole being for all practical purposes right on the bullets edge though makes me wonder.

that is interesting and I guess it would work as long as you had a good pour and such. I have some cast up with the offset sprue and am waiting on a new plate. I found a piece of A-6 that was either 1/8 or maybe 5/32 I didn't really check it just looked thick enough and I drew up a print and took it to the local machine shop where I know the owner and said " here make me this". I am pretty sure I could have done the work my self but I dont have a mill and just really didn't want to go the cave man route with just a hack saw and a file. Not fun in my book.
When I get the new plate I will cast up some more and get some of each loaded and see if I can tell any difference between the 2.  My thoughts were to use the bullet in a 7.62 X 39  but can't find any load data yet, but I could always load it in an 06 and use that for a test bed.
I will figure out something to try them in some time.
