405 W in a Ruger # 1

What do you guys think about a 405 # 1 for hunting Hogs and Deer. Probably use a heavy cast bullet not real fast. Load it to maximum with jacketed sometimes.

Since selling my Trapdoor Carbine don't own a hunting SS. Advice and opinion appreciated .

I've got one and I've hunted with it. I killed the only deer I've ever shot with cast bullets other than round balls with my Ruger .405. I shot the Lyman 420 grain flat nose bullet that I had recut to cast .412 diameter bullets. I've got an Owen 355 grain flat nose mold that casts a .412 diameter bullet also. RX7 was my powder of choice.

Your 405 will kill anything that walks in North America if you use the right bullet. I've got some 400 grain Woodleigh solids if I ever want a real hammer. Use it and enjoy it. They are discontinued and will increase in value.

You can borrow mine anytime if you want to test-drive one!

For me, it fits.  Quick to the shoulder and drops right into place - good lineup on the sights.  Comfotable grip.  (UNlike, for me, a straight-stocked highwall.)

Took a trophy waterbuck in Africa with my .405 and the Professional Hunters were really impressed with the cartridge.  I would think a reduced cast load would be ideal for hogs and deer.

FWIW,
My friend shoots a SS Ruger No 1, cal 405. It is noted that his rifle has a rather large groove dia at about 0.414. So, I suggest you slug your bore before you get into picking up molds for yours.
FWIW, I got a Ruger No 1 rebarrelled to 40-72W, -heavy(1" at muzzle), 12 twist Douglas(0.400/0.408). Built it for long range BPCR. Use Hornady 405 brass as is. Excellent brass.
Case full of Swiss 1.5 -85 gr under a 440 gr Elliptical PP bullet.
Alternate, smokeless light load of 25 gr 4759 under Lyman snover. Also, a 210 gr 0.410 cast pistol bullet is fun for plinking.

You guys are going to cost me money !   Like the Ejector tang safety easy scope mounting.  Leupold makes a Hog Scope 1-4 Variable big reticule.

I could hunt with one of my CPAs but it's about 7 movements to fire & reload for a 2nd shot what with the set trigger lack of self, cocking no ejector etc.

Where ya goin' hog hunting? My oldest granddaughter got one on the California coast last season that weighed almost 450 pounds. Marlin in 45-70 did the heavy lifting.

One modification that I'd suggest for a No. 1 to be used in hunting is to shorten the front flange of the safety.  On my unmodified No. 1 in 7X57 ejected brass hits the front of the safety and bounces back to sit in the trough.  I shortened the front of the safety on my No. 3 in 375 Win and ejected brass misses the safety and flies clear of the action.

The length of the safety plate on my No. 3 is 1.090" vs 1.180" on my No. 1.
