New to me Ballard (Read 6146 times)

	I was able to buy this nice old Ballard. I am fairly sure that it is a #10 Schuetzen Junior. According to Dutcher, "one of the scarcer Ballard rifles" Or a deluxe finished #8 with a very heavy barrel. Which would make it special order. It is a honest target shooters rifle. It has all matching serial numbers. This gun has a 28" barrel while the factory #10's were 32". I think it was shortened at sometime in its life. The front sight dovetail is 7/8" from the muzzle which according to Vall should be 1" near perfect. Wow if it could only talk. At some point a folding palm rest was added. Only the mount now exists. The workmanship and inletting fit in the wood says it was done professionally. Very nicely done. The bore is very good and I will be shooting it. Hope you enjoy the pictures as I will the actual rifle.

	LRF Whether it's actually an 8 or 10, it is still a nice old Ballard. You state you are going to shoot it but didn't mention the caliber. I notice in the close-up photos it has 11:00 and 1:00 o'clock cracks where the stock butts to the action. You might want to make sure the stock through-bolt is snug before shooting. If you are going to shoot it very much, you might consider addressing those cracks before they grow further. Good luck with your new acquisition and good shooting.

	Thanks Joe, I'm quite pleased with it. I will have fun making a palm rest for it. I know exactly how long the original was because of some patina dents on the forearm where it rested when folded up. Really like that kind of stuff because it gives the old gun a life story.

	Thanks Don for the comment. I forgot to mention the flat side which was part of the #10's and not on a #8. In addition the serial number of this rifle is in the correct range mentioned in Dutcher's book. 308XX

	Schutzenbob What a great picture and a nice rifle. Looks like a #8 to me with checkering. Nice sights but the little bit lower grade. It would make the owner proud then and probably also, now.
