Guns at the Reno Big Show

A couple of nicely engraved rifles.  These will be at the Reno show next weekend if you want to come see them in person.

This is a Johann Springer.  It's a cartridge gun.  The breech block rotates 180 degrees in the receiver to open.  Most interesting action.

Special order Ballard #6 1/2 with double set triggers, rebarreled by A. O. Zischang.

Zischang also "gunsmithed" the Ballard triggers.  Not your average Ballard engraving.

I see normal Ballard engraving. What could he have done to the triggers? They were perfect from the factory.

Nice rifles for sure! The Werndl is really nice!

This brings up a question, I have never owned a Ballard, but by all I have read it is a weak action, not nearly as strong as a 44 1/2 or HiWall, so what is the attraction?

Best set triggers and perfect balance for offhand.

6 1/2s came with single triggers?  Is that the special order? The triggers?  No, that would have been from Ballard. Okay, what is the special order feature?

If you compare the engraving, side by side, with a "normal" Ballard,
you can see that this is much cleaner, has more depth, and was done
by someone with a lot more artistic talent than one usually sees in
the factory work.

I don't know.  Ballards have, IMHO, the best double-set triggers of
the period.  These are, by comparison, better.

You really have to shoot the rifle to appreciate how fine the set is.

Yes.

A standard 6 1/2 came with a single trigger.

6 1/2 Ballard engraving differed slightly in design. Quality may have been better too.

I want that Werndl.......BAD!

Is there anyone who is especially good at fine tuning Ballard DST now?

I once owned a Zischang Ballard and those triggers were the finest I have ever handled, bar none.

I can get you a Wrendl Joe.  The bore is a little big for schuetzen, the stock is a bit plain and the engraving is missing, but you will have the real deal  Wink

I think the Austrian gun has a (modified) Werndl action. These actions were commonly seen in Austria and Germany.

I'm curious about the plate in the face of the breechblock of this Ballard. I've seen quite a few on center-fire guns converted to rimfire. What's the purpose on this one? Adjust head-space maybe?
