What is a 40-65?

I'm trying to figure out the difference between a Winchester 40-65 and a Sharps 40-65.  The best I can find is that the Win. may be .410 and the sharps .408.  Are they the same cartridge case otherwise?
These old ones are sure confusing!
Mike.

To make it more confusing, if you buy a new Sharps reproduction chambered in .40-65 it'll be the Winchester version, but with a quicker twist.   It is an outstanding midrange cartridge.

Well, thanks guys.  I recently ordered a rifle chambered in "40-65".  Sounds like I need to ask the maker what that means to him.
All this was so much easier when I shot M1's.

mike,
I expect the chamber you will be getting is the 40-65W.
You will like the 40-65W ctg. Easy to form brass from 45-70 or buy ready to load STARLINE 40-65 brass.
Typically easy to get accurate loads.
Check with your mfg as to what is the barrel rifling twist.
Usually 1:16.
In which case a +- 400 gr bullet such as LYman 410663 "Snover" bullet is an inexpensive starter mold that will shoot well out to 600yds.

Thanks, Beltfed.  I did check with the maker and it will be 40-65 Win.  The twist is 1:16.  I'm getting a bag of 40-65 Starline; I have used their brass in a couple other calibers with much success so no need to go the re-forming route.
Buffalo Arms has a mold that is supposed to work well and I will likely go that route.
Thanks again,
Mike.

Mike, what rifle is it?  If it's a Shiloh, try the Saeco #740 and the "Kidwell" 400gr Money Bullet from Buffalo Arms.  It's the one with three reduced driving bands.  Either one is like shooting a black powder laser beam Smiley

Mike,

If it is a Shiloh you will also need a set of RCBS "Shiloh Sharps" dies. Shiloh chambers their 40-65 rifles with a chamber having a cylindrical neck. Standard dies have a full length taper and can be an issue in the Shiloh rifle. Buffalo Arms handles the RCBS Shiloh dies or you can order them direct from RCBS.
