Before 405 brass and Captech brass became available Baco(Buffalo Arms) used to sell a stretched 30-40 Krag brass for the 40-70SS. At one time it was about all that was available for the 40-70SS. Times have changed.

I shot my 40-70 SS with modified 30-40 and also a few modified 303 Brit cases.  The Krag blew out slightly longer, so I preferred it as I had to seat the bullet out more for the 303.  No problem with it, except for some extraction failures on the original Sharps, but I didn't try for extreme accuracy, just fun.  I annealed it before fire forming with a propane torch just watching for the color change.  For a while, you could get 30-40 "basic", but I haven't seen any lately.  Just got some "store bought" 40-70, but haven't loaded it yet.

I blew out 7x57R for my 40-70 Ballard and it worked except for the smaller rim.  "Same as" 40-63 everlasting Ballard.  I would see if you could chamber 30-40 first as the base would be the tight fit.  The Ballard is slightly shorter than Sharps SS, so less seat out.

Just a day or two ago I posted elsewhere that Captech has .35 Winchester brass, from which .30-40 can be made.  It is longer than .30-40, so might work better for making .40-70

Tom....I don't think your too far off in thinking .30-40 Krag from .40-70SS....Back in the early 1890's, when the U.S. military was looking for a more up to date ctg. than the old .45-70..the boys at Frankford arsenal probably looked at the .40-70 SS & thought...bottlenecked and slightly shortenend....The rest is history.

Gee, and I thought they looked at the 38-50 Remington Hepburn;-) Was it a solid head case by then?

Doesn't CapTech make 40-70 SS brass already?  I seem to remember buying a bunch from them a year ago or so?

Back in the 1960's, some fella named George C Nonte Jr. recommended making 40/70 Sharps Straight from 9.3x74R brass.

Yes they can be made from 9.3 x 74 brass but the rim is too thin. There is no need to make them from anything else today with proper head stamp brass available from Captech.

Who said guns were supposed to be an inexpensive hobby?      Grin

There are ways to take care of the thin rim on the 9.3x74R.
And the 30-40 rim isn't quite right for an original 40-70 SS chamber either.

I have a question with this too, what size bullet are you using in the Hepburn? I've tried .403 ( the chamber coasted at around .409) but they don't like to chamber too well even at .403. These cases are thin and I did try neck reaming too some fit better than others...... I'm using both 30-40 parent cases that I blew out after annealing. And some real 40-70 SS cases I got from Buffalo arms. I kind of gave up on it. I didn't know if anyone else ever saw this tight of chamber?
Thanks

What is the bore and groove size of your Hepburn BBL?
I have an old 59 or 63 Sharps 40-70 with a tight chamber and a .4125 groove dia, I used a Lyman 410610 GC pistol bullet with the gc portion seated in the case on top of a grease cookie, unsized unlubed bullet so that they didn't collect dirt cases trimmed so that the bullets were against the lands, shot well to 200 yds. Unsized bullets were still undersized at .411
Hope this helps.
