Loading 22 WCF

I recently acquired a Win. High Wall and a Win. Low Wall, both in 22 WCF.  I am looking to hand load this catrridge and can not find loading dies for it.
Both actions are strong.  I have load data and I will initially load black powder.
1. Can I use 22 hornet dies to load WCF?  Cartridge cases are nearly identical((emphasis on Nearly).
2. I have found cases and bullets, but If necessary, what alterations to hornet cases must I do?
3. I also can not find appropriate bullet molds (@45gr, @.228 diam).  Any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

First, congrats on finding those beautiful rifles!

In a 1931 Ideal manual, it lists the groove diameter for the 22WCF as .224 - .2245. and the twist as 16, the following  suggestions are based on that but, I had always though the groove was .228 on the 22WCF. You'll need to slug your barrel first. If the groove is larger than .226, increase the following dimensions by that amount.

1. You can use the Hornet dies but, you'll need to lap the neck out to about .240 and find a expander of .224 - .226, depending on what size you size your bullets to.

2. If new or resized, Hornet cases will drop into the chamber, you won't need to make any changes to the cases. If not, you'll need to make a chamber cast and have a custom die made.

3. Here is where Ebay is your friend. If the groove is .224 - .226, you can use any of the Lyman/Ideal molds, 50 gr or less. The spec for most all molds that start with 225 is that they cast .227, unless marked with a U. I would suggest the 225438 first, mine casts .227 x 43 gr.

Hopefully, that will get you started.

I have a 2 cavity RCBS mold that is .228.  I got it for my 22WCF but it is 70+ grains and too heavy.  The 22 Highpower
Savage is .228 also.  I think I also have a antique Winchester mold that is marked 22WCF

I have a Low Wall in .22 WCF too (the top rifle in the photo), but I just haven't had time to get around to shooting that particular project gun quite yet.  I bought this NOE mould in a 3 cavity plain base to try in mine.  Supposed to drop at .228 and the 45 grain plain base seemed to be a perfect match for the job?  I also bought a Lee neck expanding die and then bought the NOE neck expander in .228 size that they offer for the Lee die.  Regular .22 Hornet cases fit in my rifle, so I'm planning to neck size, neck expand to .228, and try this NOE bullet ... here's hoping it will work well, but time will tell.
Good luck with your 2 rifles and I'd be interested to hear your results in loading for them.
Cheers,
Al

I use my Hornet dies with an "M" die that expands the neck enough to take a 45 gr bullet from an old Winchester mould.  This is the same "M" die that I use for normal Hornet cast bullet loads.

I've never gotten that oft-repeated phrase that the .22 Hornet shell has "almost" the dimensions of the .22 WCF.  Except for the pilot and remotely possibly a small reduction in the neck size, Grosvenor Wotkyns "Small Game Express Rifle" was a .22 WCF chamber cut in a .22 RF barrel, used with jacketed 0.223" bullets.  Certainly, some of the chambers I've seen in Hornet rifles have more variations in dimensions than the alleged difference between the WCF and the Hornet.

Some of the Lyman moulds of a certain age that are nominally .225 are large enough to work as well.  You could lap one of these out a thousandth or so also, if it is still too small.  I use a "fat" Ideal 225107GC with 4 gr Unique.

Mine is a "put together" .22 WCF on a Stevens 44 which was lined with a 0.226" liner and chambered with a .22 WCF reamer I got when the Hartford Reamer Company went out of business.

Of course, the hotter .22 Hornet loadings are not for these old rifles.
