IF I was in the business of making cases, Why would I use production time and money on products that will not pay back my investment and make my percentage of return?

If there is not a large enough market to cover making the product I would not make it.

Simple I thought.

357 Max is not being produced because there is no gun manufacturer making a gun in that caliber, so why make them?

That may hold for Starline but for Winchester if demand exceeds supply and you are already tooled to produce the product and there is no reason to sell them at a loss, why not?

So, for my notes...  For a novice without special dies or annealing, which brass is the best to convert to .32-40, i.e., .30-30, .32 Special, or .38-55?

Rebel, if ya have to make 'em, .32spl is my choice. However, I have made all of those calibers into .32-40 with no problem. My preference for the Special's case is that it needs only the shoulder ironed out. A little less brass moved than the others.
Just a wee bit of Unique case lube for me, others will disagree here.

I thought the John Wayne commemorative ammo was in .38-55...I haven't ever seen them in .32-40

I just sized down 50 Starline 38-55 2.125 brass to 32-40 for a friend.  I let him
do the work after I showed him how.  Annealed the cases first and then ran them thru 32-40 sizing die.  Had to trim quit a bit off to get them to 2.125.
Midway had them on sale for  $30.49 for 50.  This is the only case I know of
that can be converted easily to make correct length brass.  By the way I told
him to anneal them again before using because brass was probably work hard.

As to the question of why they don't want to produce these calibers. Back when Winchester re-introduced the SHORT! 38-55 brass I had a conversation with a Manufacturing Engineer at Winchester and he informed me that the company would not run any caliber unless they saw demand for a minimum of 3
Million rounds per year. And that when they did setup to run they would make a 5 Year supply. He also went into sticker shock when I described the error in length. The next time I called him he admitted the error and after that he was never available when I tried to contact him. So this may be the reason we cannot get this type of Brass from the major makers anymore. HTH, Regards, FITZ. Sad

So they made 15 million, (minimum) pieces of defective product?  I wonder who took the fall for that one?  (Probably nobody.....)

Captech is making .357 Max.   Can't make it fast enough, though.  Last run is already sold out.

But yeah, the big companies will stick to the numbers that sell in high volume.  So would I, if I had their overhead.

Has anyone done business with Quality Cartridge in MD of late?  I bought 8.15x46R from them a while back.  It works fine.

I do not know if anyone took the fall for the short brass. But Winchester never admitted publicly that there was an error. They just kept selling the short Brass. The extent of the error was the Rifles came to be made for "Short" or "Long" brass. And some after market folks started Drawing brass so the correct length could be achieved. So now we have .375 Winchester, Short 38-55 2.08, and Long 38-55 2.13 or 2.12 length. Talk about big company screw ups. Regards, FITZ. Smiley
