Rookie question: Must I pull the BR forearm from my CPA to look for the barrel sweet spot?  Not sure if I could get away from this in CBA competition so am wondering if it is worth the effort.

I hope I understand the question.
There are two separate "sweet spots." One is the barrel sweet spot if you are using a sled.  The other is the forearm sweet spot if you are shooting from the forearm.  In either case, the applicable sweet spot is determined by moving the support point back and forth until vertical dispersion is minimized.

If you will be shooting from a CPA benchrest forearm, you may not be able to find the forearm sweet spot.  I had to extend my CPA forearm by about 2 1/2" to find the happy spot. On the picture, look for the darker wood at the front of the forearm.

When shooting from a sled, I remove the benchrest forearm and replace it with a very small forearm attached with only one screw.

My Stevens Pope Ballard is as close to the front sight as I can put the muzzle rest.  It varies,  Grin

Alot to think about and go on, thanks.  My CPA likes the forearm to project 2 fingers in front of the rest; I mark it with a thin strip of blue painter's tape.  I'm still working on getting a consistent rear bag setting; it has a semi-sporter butt stock.

Thank you Jan it is nice to see that one can still learn something on this site to help others in need based on ones hard earned personal experiances that they are freely willing to share.

Mike,
This is another way to approach barrel harmonics, what I call a free floating forearm. Although you can't really have a FULL floating barrel on a single shot, because the scopes are mounted on the barrel. This arrangement is opposite the scope and might offset the scopes influence on the harmonics.

I mount a 1/4" thick plate on the bottom flat. Relieve it between the screws and then mount the forearm to it, w/o any contact with the barrel. Your forearm can be as long or short, as you like this way w/o effecting the barrel.

I didn't relieve the forearm for the 1/4" plate so, there is a 1/4" gap around the barrel for any cooling effect it might have.

My 25 Hornet HiWall has a forearm hanger Dick Spencer made to free float the barrel.  It is attached to the action. Ron Smith may have put him  up to it.  Not sure who's invention it was.
