What to do with this low wall
Mar 19th, 2016 at 10:42am
Print Post
I picked this up for a project, I would like to keep it as a 22lr
I do need to find new wood and a butt plate. I am just not up on this model. I have used GM barrels on my past builds but they are hard to get up here in Canada
I would like to build a 22 silhouette rifle or a schuetzen rifle.
This is what I have to start with ....thoughts

It's kind of a generic comment, but why not contact Ron Smith to evaluate the project. Chances are he could help a good bit and steer you towards other suppliers/vendors depending on how much of the project you want to take on yourself.

Those pictures show an interesting way to make a pistol-grip rifle.

Assuming the bore is decent I would restock it with some semi-inletted wood from one of many different sources and be done with it.  A pistol grip low wall in 22lr is a nice and relatively rare gun.  Good pickup.

The bore is fair/good it shot a nice 5 shot group at 25yds and then the group opened up a bit at 50yds i was using Eley standard
The barrel is only 20"

If you are thinking of a Green Mountain barrel, Have you tried Barry at Bits of Pieces in Delta B.C.?  He is a Canadian dealer for Green Mountain barrels.  He brought in a barrel for me once.

If I'm seeing that barrel correctly with an ~12" octagonal section and it is original then think you have quite a rare one.

SSSam posted recently that Ron Smith is now offering gain-twist 22LR liners. If the barrel needs work you could have RKS install his liner.

CPA offers excellent 95% finished/inletted wood and whatever buttplate you would like (original pattern, Schuetzen, etc.). If you want fancy wood you can pick from their on-line pic's of same.

Can't tell if it is a coil-spring or flat-spring action, but C. Sharps has the parts to make it a SST trigger if a coil-spring and MVA the parts to make it either an SST or DST if a flat-spring.

The octagon to round transition appears to have been done with either a file or a pencil sharpener. Upper tang is bent as well as the lower tang.

It is salvageable, but unless a do it yourself project, it could be quite costly.

Yes the barrel looks like it has been in a grade 10 shop class and the upper tang looks like it was bent down to make the pistol grip. With this action being modified and a 1906 flat spring model, I will place a order for some sight parts soon at MVA and ask Sheryl about parts.
I have a email into Bits Of Pieces and I have located a exhibition grade stock set .My gun builder is moving this year and can  not take on anything right now but should be back up and ready for work come fall.
The next few pictures are of the work that he did for me.

That is really nice work. Best looking 44 I've seen.
