Range book & working up loads
Mar 17th, 2016 at 9:17pm

I know there are many different range book offerings on the market but I would like to know what true "shooters" use.

I want to make up a book for my new to me Sharps rifle.

Those of you recording your information, please give me some ideas of exactly what you're recording.

Thanks.

I am not sure of what type of shooting you are doing? In my case being a Schuetzen competitior I use the ASSRA match targets for load development and practice and to also keep my notes on. I find looking at the at the actual scores / group sizes to be more meaningful than just a book of notes. By reviewing several targets in the order shot compiled over several years of year round testing containing all the data for each individual outing. One can then see a pattern of consistency or the lack of developing that simple notes just won't provide that can become somewhat deceiving or miss-leading over the long run.

Same here.  I number my targets before shooting, then keep notes by target number while adjusting loads at the range .  I can then  either cross-reference from the data sheet or write the promising loads on their respective target.   I print off two targets per sheet of paper and post 5 at a time on the backer - gives me 10 targets.

Fifty years of research have taught me that if you don't write down the results, you may as well not have done the experiment.
Record the purpose of the test, and how you intend to generate the data.  Write down all the conditions and record the results.   Then try to to come to a conclusion.  Learn to do some elementary statistics, as this will help you to design the tests and understand the significance of the results.  Saves a lot of work in the long run.

When I am working up a load I record:
Powder
Charge
Primer
Seating Depth
Bullet
Bullet temper
Wind
Temperature
If I was shooting black powder I would add Humidity

40rod has a good list there. Add lube , though.
My books are for my use, and would take some instruction for another to glean much info from. Even includes swear words. I even try to include my impressions of shooting concentration- sometimes things degenerate into a plinking session.  WinkBut, the thing is, it's consistent and serves me after a fashion. If you start using 'em just be willing to add new things when you discover the need. Soon enough you'll have a system that gets you there. The suggestion from Chris to write it down is the all-important one.

This is some good information.  I think I'll also a few spaces for chrono information.  If I put all this in Excel, I can also add photo of the target.

Roscoe, The word temper refers to the cast bullet alloy say one part tin to twenty parts lead. Or in some cases the  Lips Sealedshooter after a bad day at the range!!

Slightly OT but: when one looks at the list of conditions/variables to record it is little wonder that the std dev of velocity doesn't seem to make a difference. All of the variables have a random variation however small. To pull a small signal out of the noise is very difficult.

Our own RSW on this forum has made up a range record book.  It's in the book section under the ASSRA Home:

Shooter's Record Book, PB, Randy Wright - $12.00

Thanks for post that page.  This is what I had in mind.  I'll see how Excel works out making something like this up.  Since my laptop is there whenever I go to the range for chrono, camera, etc, I can add notes in as well.
