German primers

Biggi is having problems with her three brands of primers. All measure about .126 long. Too short for her RWS 8.15X46R primer pockets. My primers measure about .132. Any German/European members run into this problem?

She says all the primer boxes have "large rifle" printed on them. She has RWS, CCI and Federal.

Strange. I have some RWS factory brass and have used CCI, RWS, Federal and PPI over the last 5 years with no problems.

Same here. Thinking maybe her old brass has deep pockets. Excessive  cleaning?

I just measured some CCI BR-2, Fed 210 and Fed 210M. They all mic at .126 - .128". I think the specification is right about .126".
Somebody-or-other makes a primer pocket swaging tool. Perhaps Biggi could use that tool to bring her brass back into spec?

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Still not sure whats going on with her stuff. Using brass that has been loaded by someone else for many years.

Told her to seat primers flush with the case for now.

Measured my Winchester primers. Measure .127.

Biggi says no primers are made in Germany. Says everything comes from the US. I didn't know that when I started the thread.

Measured my shells, the depth of the primer pockets.
I use older and newer shells.
The older and the newer shells have different sizes of the pockets... indeed!

Use a nice American hand-tool for seating the primers into the pocket.
For older shells I should not seat the primer with full power till the limit stop...

With my current interest in primers (haha), I went and measured two types of Federals. Both .126-.128.
I also measured two batches of WLR. A brick that's twenty years old measured .128- .130, and a brick I just bought (for no good reason) measured .126 consistent. None of these hit the height you have, Joe.
Side note: this was the first time I cracked the box of the new WLR. They are brass-colored. When did that happen?

Long time ago.

I measured one 9 1/2 Rem primer. Not very thorough.

Can you do like the blackpowder loaders do and place a paper shim under the
primer to bring it up just below flush?  I just did some blackpowder cases that I
loaded pistol primers in by using .009" target paper.  Charlie

Thank you, Joe.
Biggi, I was surprised to learn that no primers are made in Europe nowadays. I once shot many RWS and Norma (still have some of those) primers and they were very good indeed.

I suggested that. Think it's a good idea.  Wink

I think those RWS are still available, but very expensive - compared with a big pack of Federal or CCI.

I buy each two years 5000 primers, usually. My dealer doesn't offer the expensive stuff.
Looking on the web in a German online shop, the price is much higher for RWS.
Bought 2000 Federal last year in June for 78 Euros (approx. 85 US$).
The same amount of RWS/RUAG would cost 150 Euros (aprox. 175 US$).

Hi Dave.

Thanks for this interesting hint. Never heard before that primers can harm brass in this way.
Huh  Shocked

Hhhmm, don't know in which shells are Federal and CCI primers. I have more than 700 shells in use. Currently all loaded, season starts soon...
Undecided

I will keep an eye on it in future!  Smiley

Dave, Have found Remington SR match primers to leak in the .32 MS right from the get go. Stopped using them, no problems. Chuck used them in his Hoch .32 MS. Gas cut all around his breech blocks. I have always used Fed SR match.
