41 Year Wait....

Print Post
I have waited 41 years for this day. Since I was 14, I have dreamed of owning a real Schuetzen rifle. I wore the pages soft on any Gun Digest article that showed these old rifles. I could not even begin to fathom how and where John Amber kept finding the gems he wrote about. I purchased an original Hepburn on this site about 5 years ago. It was described as "having its share of warts".....Some extra tang holes, some extra receiver holes, a modified buttstock, and of course extra misplaced barrel tatget mount holes. Well, I started rounding up parts and wood when I had some health issues and had to put it on hold. I recently comitted to getting it finished up and here she is. The wood and barrel blank came from Gail at CPA. The barrel blank was a Shilen, 30" match 1:10. I turned the countour, wedding band, cut the 12 pitch square threads, did the chambering and an 11deg crown blending into a radius at the muzzle OD. I had Dave Manson make a reamer to my specs for breechseating the 25-21. I have a set of Kelley Schuetzen sights and a Pope style(CPA) palmrest yet to mount. Dan at DZ did the stockwork, extractor fitting and mounted one of his scopes.

Yup, it was a good day yesterday, this rifle arrived and the county plowed in the full 3 1/2 miles to my remote home and set me free from winter and snowshoeing/walking to town since late December. Life is good! MikeC

What a beautiful rifle. I would say it was surely worth the wait!
I live in Burton, Michigan and the snow has completely melted. Time to start shooting again.
I hope you enjoy your "new" rifle.

Fantastic rifle and it looks like it is beautifully made.  I especially like the wedding band.  Congrats on completing a very classy piece.

Thanx for the compliments.  I just breechseated and shot (5) cases (2x) to fireform for Russ to make a breech seater with. With just ten shots, this rifle became my favorite. I used 9gr of 4227 behind a Hoch 105.....what a joy to shoot! Recoil was non existent and report was a far cry from what I am used to. Its 60 degrees today here with a foot of snow still in the woods. I opened all the cabin windows to let some "trapped winter" out where it is less offensive  Roll Eyes

The wedding band. I contoured it by hand on the lathe and filed the finish form on the lathe as well. I like how it turned out.

A beautiful rifle that ticks all the boxes. A couple of small screws to plug the holes on the left hand side of the action perhaps 'Nitre Blued' would be the finishing touch. The holes were obviously for attaching some form of sight now gone.
I'm green with jealousy.

Nice work on a beautiful rifle. Welcome to the "Hepburn club". CPA provides some nice wood (have some on my 40-65 Hepburn).

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels
