50-140 Garrett

Print Post
Hello,I'm new here and have a question. I have a chance to own a 50-140 Garrett mod 74. Any thoughts on this rifle? Other than it will kick like a mule. I don't plan on shooting it a lot. Just to the range every now and then. Looking for bp load info if anyone has info. Gun is in very nice shape with long range tang sight. I will post pics when I have the gun. Thanks.

I've got a Garrett in 45/70 that I started shooting BPCR silhouette with. After I rebuilt the lock, bent the lever to get the firing pin on center, bushed the firing pin hole in the breech block, lapped the barrel to get rid of a wire edge on the rifling and restocked it with a shotgun butt It functions fine and I have many thousands of rounds through it.

The 50-140 is a BEAST and most definitely should only be shot with black powder.

Do you know what the twist is? My 50/90 Hiwall is 1 in 26  and it likes 540 to 620 grain bullets.

According to SPG lubricants BP cartridge reloading book 140 g of 1F will propel a 537 gr bullet at 1479 fps. Short of wanting to kill elephants why on earth would you want to put up with that sort of recoil for punching holes in paper.

I do not know the twist rate. I can get the Garrett at a good price. Nobody at the range will have one. Lol.

That it is in really good shape and for a cheap price should tell you something. Rifles like this get built by first timers who have more money than brains. All they know is what the see on TV and want the biggest caliber available just like the old timers used on the Buffalo herds. The 50-140 is a fairly modern chambering invented by some one with inadequacy issues. Unless you enjoy pain or going on a Cape buffalo hunt there is no earthly reason to own a 50-140, that is why it is barely used and cheap. Save your money find a nice 45-90 it will do everything for a lot less.

If it really is that 'cheap', get it lined down to a reasonable cartridge or put a new barrel on. I shot a 44-100 a couple of weeks ago and didn't think too much of it with a 500gr PP bullet (which I understand has considerably less felt recoil than GG) & 100gr of 1F powder. It wasn't that unpleasant to shoot, but it did bruise my shoulder I discovered a couple of hours later.

Garret's are nice rifles.  50-140 is a brother in-law gun.   Save the barrel and put something else on. Unless you hate your brother-in-law then load it up and take him to the range.
Enjoy

If that is what you want then don't let anyone talk you out of it.  It is not something that will come up very often.  At the very least it will make interesting trade fodder if you ever decide that it is a bit too much cartridge for you.

I had a C. Sharps in .50-140.   It is now a .45-70.  Or most of the way.  The new barrel has been fitted but not yet chambered.

Mine had a 1:26 twist and it used 135gr of Fg and a 690+gr bullet.  I just couldn't shoot it well.  I bought it in a moment of weakness at a gun show as Montana made Sharps rifles don't come up for sale here often.

The guy I bought it was quite honest.  He told me that with two recoil pads he could pretty much control it  Grin .

It did draw quite a crowd when it went off.  I think it was much louder than anything our range had seen.  Even the .338 Laupas.  Only one person ( other than me ) ever wanted to shoot it more than once.

My .45-90 pushing a 530gr bullet at 1374 fps is as much abuse as my body wants to tolerate for match shooting these days.  I'm all done playing with the .50's.

Chris.

A member of TRR who lived down range a mile or so told me he knew when we were shooting LR BP. He said it was more objectionable than high power rifles and as we moved back out of the "bowl" at the 200 yard line, the worse it got.
