I usually pour the cavity closest to the hinge first, as base venting is compromised somewhat for that one once the far cavity is filled.  Fewer flawed bases in the near cavity that way. YMMV

And, yes, as others said, ladle technique is a big issue.  I assume you are using a bottom pour ladle, like a Lyman, RCBS, etc. Assemble ladle and sprue at 90 degrees to pour position,  rotate both together to pour position, roll ladle off, shift process to second cavity.

My trouble comes when I attempt to pour a puddle on the plate. Generous puddle is the method I was taught. Generous spills into the second hole as often as not. My usual way produces fine slugs with single molds- ten different weights and shapes with doubles. And, I think it goes about the same speed dipping a single from the few times I managed with a double to do it. If you get good results with 'em, my kudos.

Since I use a thermocouple to keep all the bullets within +/- .1 gr I never bothered getting my technique for doubles.  That first bullet changes the mold temp by the time the second one is poured.   Anything over 5 degrees mold temp puts the bullets out of +/- .1.

Now to blow your minds:------
Except for casting with certain molds in real cold weather here in WI,
I cast with TWO molds, alternating filling and emptying them..
Whether they are single cav or two cav.
Long as cadence is regular, my bullets are "pretty and uniform"

Arnie, I won't tell you you're nuts, because the two old geezers that taught me how to cast kept three molds goin' between the pair of guys. And did it in the winter time to boot.
I wish I knew half as much about the job as either one of them did. Better, I wish they were still around to learn from.

I been casting for thirty eight years.

Think Steve Fotou makes double barrel lead dippers, hmmmm....

Time to invent a sprue plate dam. Lead deflector? I puddle on the plate as well.

61 years?  Wow!

I have been casting about 40 but the wife is stubborn, she will not cast good bullets.  Cry  What I get for marrying a Pollack  Angry

How about a two-fer funnel sprue plate Joe?  I know you can do it.  One funnel top that fills both bullets  Huh

If you didn't want to use one of the cavities in a mold the easiest way to plug off a cavity would be to put a dollop of red hi temp silicone in the sprewplate hole, it is good for up to 850 degrees or more.

I thought I had my pair of "mentors" trained to cast my bullets. Sly ol' dogs were really roping me in, though. "Buy just one lousy old-time rifle," they say, "we'll get you some bullets."
