Art untypical to other single shots I have had good luck with bedding the forend tight to the action I then bed a one inch pressure point at the end of the forearm with RTV Silicone. Merrill Martin published a real nice article on how to get the Rugers to shoot PB bullets in Schuetzen competition and I used his method. It too was 32-40 and shot quite well. I believe the RTV Silicone was used to dampen the hammer spring harmonics if memory serves me right.

Easy fix is to stop loading fixed ammo. Or, start loading CBA style fixed ammo.

Steven Duren does a lot of conversions on Ruger No. 1's.  He would be another source of information.

Art - John Korzinek in Canton, PA has a good rep as a #1/#3 gunsmith and did .22LR conversations. Do not have any contact info for him.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

Is he still alive? If so he has to be way up there in age, I re-call reading his adds in the 70's and he looked to be around 50 back then.

CajunRebel, I was going to ask the same question.

What about it, Joe?  Inquiring minds want to know.   Smiley

I can strongly recommend Steve Durren   ("Buschenmacher" here on the site)  he spent a fair amount of time talking with Wayne Schwartz about how he did things.  He has worked on a number of 1/3s for me always with good results.   there are several problem areas with the Ruger single shot some as the result of production issues and changes that vary with time and phase of production.  In general the later ones seem to be more consistently accurate that earlier production.   Early on, Ruger, if I'm remembering it correctly relied on outside barrel production--and quality control could vary---now they are in house and pretty consistent.
The next most common issues is the forend mounting system and a search here on the site in the gunsmithing sub section should provide plenty of tips and discussion on that.
The same goes for the Ruger triggers.   Kips (when you can find one) will work, but to do it to the best advantage the rest of the ruger trigger mechanism must be tuned to work with the Kip. Steve gave me a good clean consistent 3.5# pull simply by tuning the factory parts--and leaving the factory safety in place.

My guess is that shooting "fixed" ammo may be a limiting factor-----particularly if you are looking for benchrest accuracy and using 10 shot/200 yd. 250-bullseye size groups as a benchmark to judge by.  Accuracy questions really need to have more detail as to exactly what is required since it is such an inexact term

I don't know much about CBA style fixed target ammo. I know they do pretty good with it.  Think they use hard bullets and gas checks.
My Ruger #4 is a tack driver. Put it together in 91. Still have it and is like the Canadian BP long range rifles used in the Northwest at that time. Have not shot it for years and years.
