Remington .38-55 WCF Brass

Is there much difference between Remington .38-55 WCF brass compared to  Winchester or Starline brass?

Does anyone prefer to shoot the Remington brass?

Starline is the only brass that has 2.125 cases plus their manufacturing standard weight variances are very small

George, I form .32-40 cases with both Win and Rem brass. I can't see any difference. They are both too short for some folks taste, but I also have a #$%^$#pot of proper cases and they don't shoot any different than the shorties. Black powder guys might like the length to get in all the powder, but no trouble with smokeless.
Hope this helps- but let the arguments rage.

LOL, you just might have.  I'm looking forward to a good discussion.

I recently bought a Winchester Miruku Sporter in .45-70 with the intent to re-barrel it in .38-55 for a BPC shooter.  Before I get any opinions about that, I got the rifle for a heck of a price. I also found (but haven't bought) some old new stock of Remington .38-55.

With a new barrel I can have it chambered for either length case.  First question is which length is preferred?  Is the Remington the short or long case?  Does the Remington have a thicker or thinner neck than the Winchester or Starline brass?

The long (2.125") Starline brass is much thinner at the case mouth than my Winchester brand 38-55 brass.  My lot of Starline averages about 0.0075" thick at the case mouth.

Well I missed the Remington cases, so that is a moot point. Also, my gunsmith has a Green Mtn. barrel with the 14" twist and he has a reamer for the long case. I will be using the Starline  long brass.

Well, good enough. I've not used the Starline since I have always found cases some other way. Always heard good things about it, though. Both at the range and on here. Must be good stuff, huh?
But, did you find out whether that old Rem was full length or not?

Most folks go with a 30" long barrel, but I prefer a 32" length. 30" is easier to handle in off-hand (chickens).  The 14" twist will be good for bullets up to about 335-340gr in weight. CPA offers a Postel/Creedmoor style bullet that is listed at a nominal 350gr, which would be nice, as it is only 1.38" long. Might actually work in a 14" twist barrel. My 14" twist barrel would not shoot a 360gr bullet but was fine with 340gr. Many folks are having excellent success with 12" twist barrels and GM offers them with a honed finish. My new 38cal gain-twist barrel ends in a 11.5" twist. The mid-range match I shot this weekend was won by a 38-50 shooting a 363gr 'Money' style bullet in a 12" twist barrel. Winner shot a 94-4X at 600yd & a 290-9X in some 'interesting' conditions. Damn good shooting. Good luck with yours. 38cal is very pleasant to shoot.

Thanks for the information, Glen.  Where did you shoot this weekend?
I"m going with a GM 30" straight taper full octagon barrel with 14" twist. I'm looking at a 325 gr. Brooks bullet.

Match was at the River Bend Gun Club outside of Canton, GA. 1st day was BPCR & 2nd was BPTR mid-range. Deadeye Bly shot well with a 2nd in irons BPCR & 3rd in irons BPTR.
I've found the 325gr BACo Money bullet shoots well in a 14" twist 30" long GM barrel and Brooks has a 340gr bullet for the longer distances.
My plan is to shoot the Friendship BPCR match the weekend of the 19th. I can bring along those bullets if you want to drive up to the NMLRA and pick them up.

That's not bad shooting Glenn.  How interesting were the conditions?

I like the .38-50 and have a rifle chambered for it, but have never shot it except benched at 220 yards.  I have a fast twist GM barrel, and a PJ heavy mold, but am still sitting on the fence for it and prone midrange.

Some quite squirrelly winds at 300 & 600yd. 10-15mph, but were flipping back and forth every minute, or so. Sometimes as much as a complete reversal. Needed to have good spotting calls to score well. Luckily, Deadeye Bly and I served each other well. The only problem was he didn't catch me shooting on my neighbor's target the one time until the bullet had stopped moving. Wink I sure spoiled my good 600yd score.  Embarrassed

Appreciate the thought on the bullets, but I don't think I'm going to be back from my journey to South Georgia. I will be glad when business is back to normal.
