I like the Ballard because, mechanicaly it is very unique, I think Charles must have been drunk when he designed his action.  Ledball

There are so many to like for their own reasons and variations. For smoothness, if I open a Bullard, it amazes me how seamlessly and lightly all the functions are carried out, and they generally have really good single stage triggers.

I did a quick tally of everyone's votes and here are the results. Please note that those of you that voted for more than one, (I like x for bench, y for offhand, and z for hunting...) your votes did not count towards this tally simply because I was not sure how to count them.

1885-2
Ballard-9
Bullard-1
Borchardt-1
Dehass/Miller-1
Hepburn-2
Martini-2
Peregrine-1
Stevens-3

If you include the votes for, "I like X for offhand, Y for bench, etc..." then the Ballard increases its lead even more.  It seems that the Ballard is the absolute, runaway favorite.  I might need to start looking for one to see what all of the fuss is about.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

But you left the Bullard off, and there's a vote right above your total! Smiley

I had never heard of a Bullard so I just thought that it was a misspelled Ballard!  The tally has been changed and now I am off to do some research on a Bullard.

You left out all my favorite German Schuetzen rifles, but if restricted to good old USA actions, I will vote for HiWall, have 2.
Wife has a DST Stevens 044 1/2 she thinks is best.

There are no restrictions.  Vote for whatever you like.  The above tally was not a ballot, it was just a tally.

OK, I'll take you at your word.  For me it is Ballards first last and always.  I own a few other single shot rifles, but for me the Ballard  is IT!  Winkchawk wrote on Feb 14th, 2016 at 6:49pm:

I like Ballards a lot because the barrels come out easy. Take out the breech block and extractor, remove the forestock and bahzing, easy.

That's why I like the Stevens so much.  Don't have to remove anything at all.  Just loosen the set screw, open the action, and (bahzing?).   Grin

Which one do I like best?
The one in my hands at the range.
I get infatuated as every new one comes along, but keep coming back to Maynards, 1885's, and Ballards

Well, my first experiences with single shots were Rugers, a 3 then a 1, and I am fond of both. Then I discovered the old stuff thanks to Marlinguy and some other friends. Now I've got a #2 Ballard, 3 original 1885s and two C. Sharps Arms 1885 repros.

My favorite of what I can or do own is the 1885.

Unattainable - I'd love to have a Fraser or other fine old single shot from the U.K.

I don't have a favorite.  Well maybe the Winchester Single Shot.  Smiley.  I also like the Stevens 44-1/2, Ballard, Borchardt, and Sharps 1874.  It really depends on the type of shooting.

My favorites change, I think a Ballard may be best, however a zischang borchardt is what I most lust after😍

Can't go wrong with many of them, really like them all!
