Martini's of course!   Strong, simple, safe, affordable - and more varieties and flavours than you can imagine...  And it ialso is an excellent base to build something on.

Another vote for the L.L. Hepburn single-shot rifle that was designed to shoot at targets from the start. Have three originals, 40-65 & 38-50 for BPCR/BPTR and 32-40 for Schuetzen. All were rescued from "bad" owners (varmintized or barrel chopped) and one faithful repro in .22LR (DZ Arms). The 32-40 is still being 'rescued' with the barrel being lined from 22-Lovell back to the original 32-40 and the metal being case-colored and blued. After the beautiful pic's above, I'll have to figure out a way to do a better job with mine in a single photo.

For hunting, I would have to go with the 1885 High Wall where the under-lever and auto-cocking features make it the slickest to handle.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

My first single shot rifle was a Ballard #2 in .38 Long. Only bought it because I thought having a collection of pre WWI Marlin lever actions required me to own a Ballard also. I quickly fell in love with them, and began pursuing Ballards more than the Marlin repeaters. Eventually I sold off almost all my repeaters, and reinvested the funds into more Ballards.
I love Remingtons also, and have a couple Hepburns, and some Rolling Block Sporting Rifles. I like them almost as much as the Ballards.

Lots of Ballard lovers around here.  Maybe I will have to look into them...

Ballards are my favorite, but Stevens was the best factory rifle, they will do it all.   Ledball

A Borchardt for me, IMO the strongest US action ever made during the Black Powder days. A Hepburn would come second and a Ballard third, but only for light weight rounds, like .22 RF. All three rifles have a beauty that cannot be matched today by modern weapons. Gun makers had style and grace in their designs back in the late 1800's, not so today.

Ballard for me, but I have to confess to liking all of em.
I've been told that every Ballard a guy gets adds 6 months to the life span, too.

For offhand, an original Farrow.  If you hold one offhand, it is simply just right.  I really think it is the stock design, not the action, and probably because I do not use a palm rest.  Neither did WMF.

This is a .22 rimfire with an original barrel.

My favorite rimfire bench rifle is a Ballard and my favorite centerfire, just because, is a Stevens 47 Range Rifle in .28-30, built on a 44 action.

That's like asking which of your children is your favorite. I'm fond of all my single shots and I own them for different reasons. I like the Ruger #1 for a hunting rifle. I like the 1885 Winchester for the creative design. It shows John Browning's genius mind. I like my '74 sharps for tradition. I like my Maynards for versatility. I can go from 22 long rifle to 45/70 on the same frame in a few seconds. I like rolling blocks, trapdoors and Martinis for simplicity. I like Ballards for style. I like them all some way or another and they are all my favorites.

Have owned many Single Shots, shot even more.   Appearance nothing better than a Ballard. Hunting rifle probably a classic British action.

But my use, targets only Stevens 44 1/2

Difficult decision! I have Martini's, Low Walls, High Walls, a Hepburn and even a few Ballards. I have to say that the Ballard captures my idea of beauty the most, but only by a small margin.
