Stevens 418 Walnut Hill without speed lock?

Just had one delivered today that I bought on Gunbroker.  No speedlock. I thought they all had it? At least all the ones I have do. Did someone change it or am I missing something? If it has been changed, what does it take to switch it back?

slumlord,

If you already have other 418's (and the sporterized 418 1/2 versions that are supposed to be the same barreled actions as the 418), pull the buttstock off and compare the parts.
Your eyeballs should tell you what's different, and what parts you'd need to switch it back.

PS: Let us know what you discover.

The 1934 Stevens component parts catalog has a page devoted to the 418 and 418 1/2 rifles.  The parts in question are listed as either "O. S." and "N. S." which I believe stands for "Old Style" and "New Style."

The parts are hammer, link, mainspring, mainspring plunger and trigger.

"New Style"  would be for what Stevens called the "short, fast hammer fall" feature that you are referring to as "speedlock."

The serial # is 6 so it is an early gun.
