Also, keep in mind that the German Schuetzen rifles are a lot more butt heavy that the American counter part, when it comes to balancing them on something.

Some sort of a soft barrel clamp would help keep it on the box.

Indeed.  A few kerf cuts in the base of the front barrel rest, with a nice brass wing nut bolt through the stem would convert the front rest to a barrel clamp.  Making the whole barrel tilt downward and forward slightly and a snug form-fitting rear rest would make the whole affair stable for cleaning and range maintenance.  LIft-out ammo trays, holders for sight keys, a powder measure attachment point and myriad other custom additions are envisioned .  I'm sending in my membership dues this week so maybe an article is in order.  Thanks again for suggestions and criticisms.

Frank

Here's an inexpensive box that has done me well. I thought I'd use it till I built one...ten years later I'm still using it. Sits on the side of the  concrete table, bolted on outside wood that my cradles drop into like the BPCR Boxes have. Theres even a mirror on the lid when you open it to look your best at a Match! Those Grizzly boxes are what my buddy also is using. He bought an oak box for just a few dollars more, just because he liked the darker wood.

These look like they are pretty good boxes. I don't own one though.

With a 20% off coupon, they are only $64.

Those Harbor Freight boxes tend to have sticky drawers and the hinge mechanism on the front panel tears itself apart pretty quickly. I'd probably give the Grizzly a try for a range box.

I have a couple of the Harbor Freights at work and they're ok for stationary storage with the front panel thrown away.

I may have to go to my local HF and actually look one over closely. I've got a couple ancient machinist's boxes, but I use one for just sights, and the other for parts. Hate to make them into range boxes.

I use the HF box. Works well for me and the $ is reasonable.
