Forming 8.15x46R from 32-40

Learned a lesson today; went out and fire-formed 25 32-40 cases cut to 46mm and discovered that they actually shortened .2mm as a result of the process.  Gonna have to cut the next batch longer - measure twice, cut once!

Hate to see the 32-40's get cut when there's so many 30-30 cases out there.
I found the same thing with my 8.15 X 46R.

Regards, Joe

I feel your pain; these were an odds and ends lot of reloads bought at a gun show.  I pulled the bullets, dumped the powder and put them away.  I DO have a supply of NOS stock that will NOT get cut.
Nearly all the 30-30s have rims too thick to allow closing of the tilting breech, btw.   Don't have access to a lathe to turn them down.

It's best to fire form the brass, before you do anything. I use 10 gr Unique and fill with CoW. At 46mm, you'll have a long way to the start of the rifling.

The chambers in most of the 8.15x46r, are pretty long and if you fire form first, you can shorten the case until your bullet, whether SR or cylinderical, will just fit the neck.

If you have a SR bullet and after the above, it still won't chamber, cut it back in .010 increaments, until it will just chamber.

In my rifle, the cases can be 1.94 (49.3mm) and still be short of the rifling and the ID of the case mouth is .316 @ at length.

I forgot to say:

Take the expander out of the 32/40 die and use FL, 30/30 cases, drop the case in the chamber and measure how far it needs to go and then shorten it by that much. Before fire forming.

Thanks.  I need to find a way to thin the rims sufficiently to seat firs.  Another project......

I used to use Winchester 38-55s to make 8.15 X 46Rs they're too short for a real 38-55 chamber anyway so it helped use them up.

I used .32 Win. Spl. to form cases for my Aydt. I had a bunch of them, and they were easy to form and trim for it. Used them for my .32-40 also, until I ran into a bunch of .32-40 at our local small show cheap.

Pentz, You can bite the bullet and order new RWS 8.15x46R cases from Huntington in oroville, Calif. 530-534-1210 . 20 new cases cost  $ 35.98 plus  $ 5.95 two-day mail.  I hope this helps. Bonner

Thanks.  I grew up in Oroville and will be heading down in 3 weeks to visit family.  Always stop in the Huntington store to get a scare from their pricing and will inquire.  My father went to school with Fred Sr. and we always bought our stuff there; I still use my RCBS Junior I bought in High School.
