	It didn’t hurt Pope’s reputation that for years he was a top shooter. It is interesting to note that in the famous Election Day match with Hudson after Pope dropped 25 points on the shot with no bullet he out-shot Hudson for the rest of the match finishing just a few points behind Hudson. 40 Rod

	To read an article written by Pope do a google search for: Offhand Rifle Shooting by H. M. Pope. Worked for me and got that article where he said you should stand on your hind legs and shoot. Maybe his relatives had front legs as well. But, it's all pretty good advice as written.

	A lot of what Pope is quoted as saying is funny today, and I assumed he was trying to be funny back then. He had a reputation for being gruff, but can't help but think he also had a sense of humor. When I've read about the various signs he seemed to have all over his shop, they seem to tell a story of someone who might be cantankerous, but also humorous.

	Marlinguy. Yea Rowland liked Schoyen Barrels but he shot the famous Rowland group with a Pope rifle.

	Yeah, I always figured that Pope had humor in his signs and quotes. He was just what is called sarcastic. I also "suffer" from the malady. I always have felt that I'd have liked him if he were around today (or me back then). I grew up around a bunch of folks that wouldn't get any awards for being PC today, and got along with 'em just fine, so Pope would have been a perfect fit.

	If you were on Popes good side he could be a warm and generous friend. Once you got on Pope’s bad side he cut you dead. Case in point When Rowland made his famous group Pope got a copy of the group to display. Shortly after Rowland told an interviewer that one day he would make a good group with his Pope and the next day make groups just as good with his Schoyen. After Pope read that he cut Rowland dead. It was said that Rowland wrote him numerous times and that Pope wouldn’t even open the letters. 40 Rod

	Although Rowland did shoot his record group with a Pope barreled gun, I think there might be some luck involved in that happening. I doubt his Schoyen barreled guns couldn't have done the same, had he picked one of them that particular day. Most likely it was just his day to shoot his best group, and the Pope barrel that was with him that day. They both made wonderful barrels, and the fact Rowland owned/shot both really tells the story.

	Attached is a series of pictures detailing the fact that H.M. Pope attended MIT and graduate with the two year non-scientific degree aimed at those with industrial pursuits rather than "scientific engineers". Hope this covers your questions. Charles (for Hiznibz)
