Ruger no. 1 in 7x57 ???

My deer and elk rifle for 30 years has been a ruger no. 1 in 7mm mag.  The last couple of years that 9 lb. rifle has seemed awful heavy, so I bought a no. 1 light sporter in 7x57.  It weighs about 7 lbs. I did this based upon some recommendations as I was leaning towards the .270.

Now I need to reload for my new rifle.  I never was able to get better than 2 inch groups out of the 7mm mag, so I am not expecting much better than that out of the new rifle.  I am  saying based upon the short comings of the rifle and not the cartridge.

What I am wanting from you folks here is advice covering this caliber and rifle.  I hope to get an accurate load using the 140 + or - grain bullets.

I have tried the search function here and it's has not been much help.

I have a Ruger No. 1 in 7X57. My favorite load is a Barnes TTSX 140.0 grain bullet and 47.0 gr H4350. I have used this in Africa on several plains game including larger ones like blue wildebeest and gemsbok. All one shot kills.

From my reading and experience, I have learned that no. 1's are hit and miss for out of the box accuracy.  By that I mean a rifle that will shoot 1.5" at 100 yds.  How is yours?  Did you have to do anything to it to get it to shoot well?

Great all around deer bullet is the Sierra 140 btsp over either 4320 or 4895

My favoriate elk load in 7X57 is 45,0 gr IMR4350 and 170 gr Nosler Partition.  Not quite the smallest groups but a meter or more penetration on elk at 100-150 meters.

I have seen two problems with the Ruger #1 in 7x57. First, some of the chambers are not very good. Second, they used the full length "international?" forend on a lot of them. Either or both of these issues may reduce accuracy. YMMV. The 7x57 cartridge, however, is excellent.

My No. 1 in 7x57 is the lightweight with a 22" barrel and an Alex Henry forend. It wants to shoot well - I've shot 100 yd groups 1/2" wide, but vertically strung to 2 or 2 1/2" with both Remington 150 grainers and Speer 160 grainers.

My understanding from reading is that the fix for the vertical dispersion is to bed the forend so it doesn't touch the receiver or the barrel, and perhaps also add a set screw in the hanger that puts pressure between the hanger and barrel at the front of the hanger, but I have not yet done either.

The secret for my 7mm Mag was to add pressure between the front of the fore end and the barrel. A few pieces of tape, I think.

oneatatime,  I'll give the tape a try next time I go to the range. I haven't free floated my barrel on the No. 1 yet, may as well try your tape suggestion.

My No. 3 in .375 Win is free floated and shoots very well.

Thanks to all for you helpful replies.  This is my second no. 1.  My other is a 7mm mag.  I have had it for 30 years and it has been a real favorite of mine.  I haven't made any modifications to it as it was out of the box "okay"  not good but okay.  After reading all I could about the issues with the no. 1's, I am apprehensive about firing it for fear it may be a problem child.  I've had enough of those.

I've had good luck with the 145 gr. Speer flat base with 50 grains of IMR 4350. If you think that is too hot then back off to 48 grains. I've shot 3/4-7/8" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with that load in my #1A 7x57

I'm partial to controlled expansion bullets. Nosler in my case.
One, and only,  experience on elk was a 243/85 gr. With such a light rifle on has to
place the shot right and limit range to about 125 yds.
Nevertheless broadside shot broke the shoulder messed up the lungs and put the elk down. Elk got back up and moved about 20 yds shaking badly. Second shot
clipped a rib going in and left a 1.5" exit hole in the neck. End of elk.

I'm certain a 7mm would have gone right thru but it might have still needed the 2nd
shot. Hunters lose elk with 270's and '06. Sad

Just my opinion but I think I'd go with a 140 gr. There is a slight gain in 300 yd
energy with the 140 vs 160 gr. Maybe flip a coin. Wink

My recipe for the 7X57 in a #1 ITL is 48 gr of R19 with a 150 gr. TSX. ...........Hasn't failed me yet and shoots under 1" groups.

I started hunting with a 7x57 in a Model 93 Mauser when I was 11 years old.  In those days Remington factory loaded a 175 gr round nose bullet at a little over 2400 fps.  That combo was deadly on the blacktail deer and I really should have stuck with it but as I got into high school I pleaded for a 30-06 like everybody else was using.  50 years later I have gone back to the 7x57 and my bullet weight of choice is 160 grains.  I acquired a Ruger #3 a few years back with a custom stock and barrel in 7mm Ackley Krag that shoots 1/2 moa when the load is tuned.  It has the set screw fix on the forearm.  The 160 grain Speer has dropped two hogs with one shot each with that rifle.  Somewhere over the last 60 or 70 years we have all forgot that many animals were killed with 30 caliber rifles shooting heavy round nose bullets up to as much as 220 grains.  The 7x57 is an enjoyable round to shoot and in a #1 can be throttled up to some pretty impressive figures.  My vote would be a 160 grain bullet sighted in 3" high at 100 yards.  If the animal is 650 yards away, do what hunters have done for generations, stalk closer.  My two cents worth.  Tom

The set screw fix in the hanger might be the best way to do it but the tape in the fore end tip channel in my 7mm Mag was good enough to get 4 shot 1 5/8 inch groups at 200 yards with 160 grain Speer Mag Tips over 78 grains of H870 with an OAL of 3.17 inches. Seating depth (derived with a lot of testing) was very critical with .020 less opening the group to 3 1/2 inches and .020 more opening it even more. Minor changes in seating depth are something I always play with and it has made huge differences in several rifles through the years. I suppose I should mention that in my #1 .2 grain of powder either way also made a significant difference. Test, test, test.
