Rem No.1 Rolling Block w Ladd Double Set Triggers

Print Post
I found a rifle locally yesterday.  It's a custom Remington No.1 Rolling Block rifle with double-set triggers that has been converted to .22 and restocked.  ... and topped off with an early Fecker scope.

The action is an original No.1 action with a rebated octagonal top.  The photo here doesn't show it, but there are light traces of original case color.  The breech block has some sort of modification, but looks to me more like the firing pin may still be in the center (the bore of barrel is not offset).  The hammer has been "lightened" considerably with a low of metal removed.

The double-set triggers functioned properly.  I partially disassembled them to clean up old dried grease with Q-tips and solvent.  It didn't need it, but I was looking for a gunmaker's name.  Other than custom gunmakers (e.g. Carlos Gove), Remington never made a double-set trigger for the Rolling Block rifle.  They made single-set, but never double-set.  A similar set of triggers by C. D. Ladd (San Francisco) is shown in Marcot's Rolling Block book.

The barrel is originally marked "44" and has been relined to .22 and the bore is mint.  It may be a stainless barrel liner.

I am not exactly sure what I'll do with this rifle if anything.  With its unique triggers, I am tempted to either re-barrel or reline the rifle to something larger ... and restock it with a standard Remington pattern.

Thoughts and opinions are appreciated ...

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Very interesting Joe. Wonder if the builder used DST Hepburn parts to make up those triggers?

Good point ... I looked for photos or schematics of Hepburn double-set triggers but couldn't come up with anything.  If anyone has photos, please share.

Thank you,
Joe

One thing that is different is the adjustment screw location. Look at my most recent Hepburn pic here too see.

I'll get an internal pic for comparison shortly.

Interesting rifle and excellent workmanship, particularly the breech block and hammer machining.
The triggers look very similar to the Ballard type DST and sear installed on the homemade Walker-Hepburn and thought I had done something original.
Glad to know who came up with the idea and should work well.

Best thing to do with that rifle to sell it to me!  It tugs at my heart strings. Really great find.

Very interesting/unusual/rare old rifle. If it was mine I'd leave it alone and proudly shoot it.

What difference in lock time would you say there is with the lightened hammer block?

It is a beauty. Single shot .22's of this quality are a mite rare.

Joe,
Thanks for sharing the pictures, like many on this forum I have a real passion for set triggers, I made my first ones for a Mauser, then a single set for a High Wall, working on a set for a Ballard, but the double set for a Roller - interesting to say the least, I have a trigger guard casting that's going to become  a set trigger arrangement.  Thanks for the pictures.
