have you thought of getting the barrel recut instead of lined. if it is a .25 I would think someone could rebore and rifle it to a larger cal.

If you need .40 or greater thn I'd also vote for the .40-65.  My Shiloh in that cartridge with a 1:16 twist is excellently accurate with the Saeco #740 bullet. The brass is very easy to make which is a benefit.  If you go with a .40-65 then you might want to have a look at the Shiloh chamber specs.

40/65 made from 45-70 brass, readily avalible, easy to form by just using a 40-65 die.
good for 500 yds if need be.  Might be a bit punishing for bench but what the heck.

Rebarrel is cost effective instead of boring, or relining.

I'd have a 40/65 and a 32. Best of both worlds..... Sounds like a swap barrel CPA>>>>>>>>>>>

Looks funny.

For 200 yard target shooting. a 40+ caliber is not needed. I know what the OP posted but he may not know that.

Joe, maybe you missed the OP's post where he said his club has a 200 yard match requiring 40 caliber or larger. A 16 twist barrel throwing 400 plus grain lead certainly is overkill for that.

Read it three more times. Does not say his club has a match requiring .40 or over.

Hmm.......... Undecided

24 inch barrel?  Short and loud. Be careful you don't start a fire.

I'lll second the 40-50 BN idea - brass can also be made from cheap and plentiful 45-70 cases, more frugal on powder than 40-65; and plenty for 200 yd work.   Heck, I even consider my 32-20 with BP good enough for 200m work!

.40-50SS are easy to make as well from .30-40 Krag or .303 British cases. Around the same cost wise as .45-70 brass. No bottle neck to deal with if your using wads.

I make mine with a tapered expander and a .40-50SS file trim die.

OP was not specific match required 40 + but it's a common match requirement. Assuming it's required.

I shoot a lot of 200 yard club matches have for years.  Have a 40/65 it's a fine caliber it's not the optional 200 yard cartridge. Too much case capacity.   Also have a 38/40 and it runs out of gas at 200.

If 40 is the rule and never used at longer range smaller than 40/65 would be best.   Optional for 200 paper targets is 32/40 Steel 38/55.  Many match scores have proved it beyond doubt.

A 40-50 Straight case has all the boiler room that you need for 200-yard work. It will also give you better load density.

Just above your first reply Joe.

"My club hold matches requiring 40 cal and up. Never considered the 40/50ss. I'm going to do some research on it. Thanks for the input!"
