200 yard cartridge advice sought

I have a high wall currently sporting a 24" barrel that has been relined to 25 cal. The liner is worn significantly. It is a heavy barrel, octagonal to round measuring about .9" at the muzzle, so a lot of metal to work with. I'm thinking of having the barrel re-relined and am pondering what caliber to choose.
Rifle will be used for 200 yard max target shooting, 40 cal or greater. Considering cost of dies, brass, molds , ease of reloading and reasonable accuracey, what cartridge would you recommend? This will be a cast bullet, black powder rifle. I'm leaning toward 40-65. I'm also partial to 50/70 (have other 50/70 rifles), but am open to suggestions. Thanks !
Btw 2.5 MOA is acceptable.

40-65 for all the reasons you list (except that it will be a lot more accurate than 2.5 MOA).

Why not a .32-40 or .38-55.  Both can work very well with black powder and will very shoot well at 200.

Another vote for .40-50SS.

I make my brass from Rem .30-40 Krag.

Easy to make a 40-50 out of 40-65, just put in 50gr powder and couple of extra wads. Do that with mine , even for 500M rams.

I'll vote for the 40/50 SS. Easy to make and load for. Entirely adequate for 200 yd shooting or even farther. Yes, you can load others down but it's not the same.

I vote for either 38-55 or 40-65.  Are you thinking about shooting silhouettes or just paper targets? That would make  difference in caliber and bullet weight.
Brass for either caliber I mentioned would be less time consuming than caliber you have to make from other brass and cheaper in the long run=more shooting time. JMOI.
I have a Roller in 40-65 with a 26" #5 barrel and use 410 gr. cast bullets.

Never mind the mule. Just load the wagon.

m m ... if 200yds is going to be your maximum distance, personally I would reline for the 32-40 or 38-55.  There plenty of accurate charges and bullets for these calibers.  The 40-65 is a 1000yd bullet reload in black powder.  But if your desire is  the 40-60 or 40-65, here's the molds designed for blackpowder:
* SAECO 370 - 380gr ... used for the chickens at 200M
* SAECO 470 - 420gr ... steel out to 500M and long range to 1000yds
And if 38-55 tickles your fancy, the Ideal 375166 with BP is MOA to 300yds and is accurate on steel from 200 to 500M.  Accurate Molds has made a clone of this bullet
PS: I shoot all 3 bullets with black powder

OP mentioned in 1st post:

(Rifle will be used for 200 yard max target shooting, 40 cal or greater.)

My choice would be 40-65 - don't need to re-invent the wheel.  Wink

Regards, Joe

My club hold matches requiring 40 cal and up. Never considered the 40/50ss. I'm going to do some research on it. Thanks for the input!

40-50SS is a real neat cartridge.

If I were to make up another 200yard target rifle, would make it 8.15X46R.

Shoots black as good as the 32-40. Have never seen a case separate. Have not measured any case stretch at all with BP or smokeless. Cases are easy to make.

BP for target shooting with the BP crowd?  40-65.  Oh what the heck, have a rifle made for all of um! No, wait. Okay the 38-55.

A lot depends on for what twist you can get the liner. The 370 grain Saeco #640 works great out to 500 in my 18 twist 40-60 Maynard but it won't handle anything heavier. My 16 twist 40-65 likes the heavier bullets like the Saeco #740 for 500 but for Cowboy Silhouette at 200 is happy with even the ~280 grain bullet for the 405 Winchester.

I forgot. Forget the liner. Buy a new barrel blank in the caliber you want. Set your old barrel aside.

If you must use a liner, be sure to lap a little taper in it. I don't mean "fire lapping", hand lapping.
