Looking up some info on 32 long but can't find a case length. Can they be made from 32 mag?

32 long with the inside lubed bullet, or outside lubed?
I'd do a chamber cast to get measurements, and decide on the type of bullet.
If you can't find 32 Long Colt brass, you may be able to size down 32 S&W Long brass instead of the longer H&R Mag cases.

32 Long can be made from 32 S&W Long.   First have to turn the web diameter down, then size down.  Trim to length,  then you have to turn the necks so that it will handle the heel-type bullet.   Lot of work, but it is not the kind of cartridge that you are going to shoot a LOT.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The original Ballard chambering was for the .32 Long at .82" long. The .32 Long Colt is 1.03" and surprisingly fits in my Ballards. But it's a much smaller bullet, and doesn't give good accuracy in my Ballard in .32 Long.

Size first, then reduce the web.  Otherwise you get a ring of thin metal just above the web that is an invitation to case failure.  Been there, done that.   Phil

Assuming that we are talking about .32 Colt, the case length depends on whether you are using the old heeled bullet or the later hollowbase bullet with the case covering the lube grooves.  Chamber is the same.

There's a guy who sells both the cases and the heeled bullets for the Colt on Gunbroker.  Read his description.  He knows

Tenmile's bullet is from the 299153 mould.  There is/was a mould 299154 that cast a heavier and longer bullet. I picked some up at a gun show, thinking they were the 299153, and spent a few  mighty confused hours when I found that the loaded rounds using .84" brass were too long for the chamber in my Bay State.    Undecided

Well, looking in Donnelly's The Handloader's Manual Of Cartridge Conversions, he says to make the 32 Long Centerfire (also called 32 Long Rifle) cartridge case from 32 Long Colt brass by trimming 0.1" off of the 32 Long Colt brass to a finished case length of 0.82".
Chambers varied some back then, so it may still be a good idea to do a chamber cast first.

If you had a half dozen 32 Long rifles at hand and did some measurements of chamber diameter, bore diameter and chamber length, you'd probably think you were dealing with six different chambering, and these days, you likely are simply because of manufacturer's different ideas of the best original chamber dimensions and the size the chambers are now after years of shooting, cleaning, wear and corrosion. I found that you have to take measurements, figure out the bullet you want to use, then start working with 32 Long Colt, 32 S&W, H&R, or 327 FM cases to get something to fit correctly. This will usually involve lathe work and odd sized dies. Once you do that you usually get rewarded with an ammunition and rifle combination that shoots pretty well and is very easy on your modified brass. In other words, you have to make cases to fit what you do have, instead of what you think you should have.
