Smokeless in a Ballard 38-50

I would like to work up a smokeless load for my Cody Ballard. Krieger barrel 1x14 chambered in 38-50. I have two bullets that I have been using with black powder loads. 340 gr 1.293 and a 364 gr 1.482. Plan to use 4227. Other suggestions? What's a safe load in a Ballard?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

You're talking an action made from modern steel, that's even stronger than the original forged Marlin Ballard. Not that I'd recommend any hotter loads, but it can take what the originals took. Smokeless data for the .38-55 should be a good starting point, and just start with the lower levels listed, and work up from there.
I like Unique myself, but some people wont use it because of the small charges. I use 8.0 grs. with a 320 gr. bullet in my .38-55, and have gone up to 10.0 grs. with a lighter bullet. I think the 8.0 gr. is a good starting point. If you like slower powders, I'd look at 4759 or 4895 for it.

Thanks for the info. I would never thought of trying Unique. I have some 4759. Will give that a try also. I will let you know how it turns out.

A stiff load but shot exceptional with 350 gr bullet. 19.0 gr Alliant 300 MP. Start at 17.0 and work up, same burn rate as 4759.A 1/4 piece of tissue paper  balled up to keep powder down, use magnum primers only. You will be all over target with regular primers. Pete
