I've owned this #3 for quite some time now, but recently picked up a correct length old Stevens scope to put on it. The Ballard was sent from the factory sans a rear barrel sight, and has the Marlin gallery tang sight, and globe front sight. It's a very early #3, so it also doesn't have the concave top receiver that is usually found on later #3 Ballards. It doesn't have the typical lightweight 24" barrel either; and is equipped with a heavy weight 28" barrel. Caliber is .22 Long.
Stocks on this well used old #3 are unusual also, being maple, instead of walnut, and having a shadow line cheekpiece, well worn 22 lpi checkering, and an odd brass crescent buttplate, similar to some pre Marlin Ballards.
I had to have a friend mill out some narrow scope bases to match the spacing on the barrel, and fit the early Stevens scope. The scope dates back to right after Stevens bought Cataract Optical in the early 1900's, and is a 6x. The optics are beautiful in the old Stevens scope, so didn't need any further cleaning, or work. Picked up the bases today, and finally got it all mounted up!

I agree ... the scope looks like it's been with this rifle for a very long time. It's a very nice setup.

Thanks! Ever since I purchased this Ballard, I've looked at the plug screws and wondered where the scope went? Hoped I'd find the perfect length scope for it, but didn't think I'd find one of the correct era and patina. Pretty lucky.

Sigh....came to this game too late in life for the really fine old rifles.... Cry

Yes, it's getting increasingly harder to make single shot purchases as time goes by! I think my first Marlin Ballard cost me $200, and was a pretty nice #2 in .38 Long. Was very excited when I sold it years later for $400!!  Grin Time, and various movies, and books, have really brought the old single shots up in value!
