Ruger #1 rear sight question
Dec 18th, 2015 at 5:59pm
Print Post
Occasionally I see on one of the forums where somebody is shooting a Ruger #1 in 32-40 or 38-55 and I am wondering what they use for a rear sight and do they drill and tap holes in the receiver to mount them?  Curiosity killed the cat again!  Tom   Roll Eyes

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Friend of mine built one up for schuetzen with a .32-40 full octagon barrel. He D&T the tang for a tang sight, and omitted the tang safety to put it on.

I'm not shooting my Ruger #1 in any matches, but long ago I drilled and tapped the receiver for a Williams peep sight and it works out pretty well for me. But, this is more of a hunting  (30-06) rifle for me.

Years ago I had a Ruger #3 in .30-40 Krag that I had rebarreled to .32-40 and Paul Shuttleworth made me a pearch belly stock and a fore arm.  I had the receiver D&T for a Lyman receiver sight and it worked out alright.

Steve Duran just recently rebarreled another #3 for me in 327 Fed. Mag. I put a #1 butt stock and Steve made me a BR fore arm. I bought an Anchutz diopter rear sight and bought an adapter to fit on my scope base on my barrel.  I can take the Anschut diopter sight off and mount my Lyman STS on the scope base. CPA has the adapters listed in their online catalog.

Never mind the mule. Just load the wagon.

It's funny how sometimes these questions come up at just the right time. This afternoon I was going through some of my old Precision Shooting and Accurate Rifle magazines (an enjoyable winter pastime) and there is an article in the January 2003 Accurate Rifle by Roger Clouser about iron sights for a Ruger #1, part 2.  He made and adaptor to mount a Lyman (I think, maybe a Williams) receiver sight using the existing scope rail. No drilling or tapping, thus preserving the integrity of the original receiver.

New England Custom Gun makes a peep sight to fit 1/4 rib of No.1.

For rifles that have been drilled and tapped for Lyman/Unertl blocks, number of smiths have made adapters that allow you to mount a Redfield Olympic or Int'l rear sight on the rear sight block.

Talk about serendipity, been looking through a huge stack of both Precision Shooting & Accurate rifle for that very same issue. I have PS from about 1992 until it went out of business so it's a large stack of magazines. Thanks for the issue date and month. Looks like something to mess around this winter. My #1 is a blued 45/70 which I believe the author used in his accuracy write ups. I've also seen #1's set up using a martini adaptor as sold by Redfield mounted on #1's using either the Olympic or International rear sights and a Redfield globe front sight. thanks again, Frank

Neal Rice made these sight mounts a few years ago. They attach to  a scope block and accept a Redfield sight.

That's one I use on my #1 in .405Win.  Stable.  Takes a little to adjust so quick adjustments are iffy.

My solution to traditional tang sight mounting on a couple of Ruger No 1s for Traditional BPCR was to
1.0 remove the safety.
2.0  fashion a small steel block that fits inside the action just under the tang sight slot, D&T 8-32 for the Front sight screw on a "Ballard" base tang sight spacing.
3.0. Drill an appropriate hole into the top of the stock wrist so as to epoxy in half of a 8-32 coupling. Of course spaced to the aformentioned "Ballard" tang sight base spacing.
4.0 Epoxy in the half coupling.
5.0 attach tang sight of your choice.
Works well for me.
