For the distances you'll shoot, I wouldn't go over a 300 grain bullet myself. I've shot my old Ideal 255 gr. in my Schoyen Ballard out to 400 yds. and gotten excellent results with a 255 gr.. I have another Ideal that casts a 320 grain, and at the 125o fps load I use, the recoil is not offensive at all. But the Schoyen is a 12 lb.+ gun, so if yours is lighter it may feel more kick.

I shoot money bullets in my 45 and 40 caliber rifles and they work well.  The 45 will do 1200 yards and the 40 out to about 700.   

In my 38-72, for closer work, I use the RCBS 312 weight bullet for pigs at 300 meters.  Its a low cost mould that does the job very well (10 in row sometimes).
