Scope Blocks

Took my rifle to the gunsmith today to buy and install a couple of blocks for my new Lyman STS 20X.  He pulled out two used, scratched and slightly rusted blocks and said he'd clean them up and cold blue them and they'd work just fine.  Oh, and one of them was twice the length, but he said he'd cut it off.  You know, I've got this brand new C. Sharps 1885 and a mint condition STS and I'll be darned if I want some makeshift blocks installed on it.  So where is the fastest place to buy good (new) scope blocks.

Called Steve all morning and never got a response.  Finally e-mailed him, but his website says delivery could take as long as 4 months if he's nothing in stock.  I'll check with CPA.  Thanks.

Chris,
Make sure you get blocks high enough. Low blocks can be a problem with the STS and similar large Objective--
As you go up in elevation at longer ranges, the Obj can hit the barrel, even at 200yds depending on the trajectory of your cartridge/bullet.
Tell me how I know...

What height do you recommend?  Brownell's sells a .170" as their lowest and then it goes to .250".

Give them a call. Pete or John can help.
Being in OK, I'd call DZ Arms (Dan Zimmerman) in OKC or Steve Baldwin in Acadia. Both likely have and you can have as quickly as you wish to drive over. Plus, DZ runs has a winter-long pellet rifle match in his shop that everyone is invited to that might interest you. Unless you live in the tip of the panhandle (which you do not, as there are no "woods" anywhere close to there Wink) it is a short drive.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If leaving a phone message, please state your name and number first.  Due to the volume of calls, the answering machine has a one-minute recording limit.
- As a one-man operation, and due to noisy equipment operating, it is often difficult to answer the phone during the day.
- I usually return calls in the evenings (EST) or on weekends.  Remember, unless you leave me a message, I will not be able to contact you!
- I try to keep most items in stock.  Occasionally I will be out of something - please be patient while I re-stock that product.
- Special-order items (made to customer's specifications) are not returnable.  Stock items are returnable if undamaged.
- Although I ship with tracking, this only tells if the package has been delivered, not to whom.  Additional tracking services are available for added cost.

Thanks guys.  Appreciate all the suggestions.  Never thought of Dan at DZ, though.  I ordered from Brownell's last night, 2nd day delivery, so will have my blocks soon.  Just overly eager to get this scope mounted.

Chris,
First of all, do not get the Brownell's( "South Shore"  scope bases.
I have had trouble with them. Too tight a fit on lyman STS
or TS scopes.  Had to have a couple of them surface ground
until they fit the Lyman scope rings.
Second, suggest say 1/2" front, 5/8" rear blocks.
Now that I have Steve Earl's website address, I expect to
get some of his bases to replace several tight fitting Brownells bases. I like his comments about dimensions. I just hate having to tap my scopes on to the Brownells bases with a delrin rod and a mallet.....

Well, as I stated in the previous post, they are on their way from Brownell's.  Thanks for the warning, though.  I'll check them right away when they arrive.

In reecent months I have been getting Unertl-type scope blocks for Steve Earle within 1-2 weeks of emailing my order (all were in stock). I have gone entirely to his blocks.

I've not been able to get hold of him.  So I bought mine from Brownell's.  Not my favorite supplier, but we'll see if they work.  I'm sure Steve is a nice guy and a good supplier..............just could never connect.
