I learned that trick from an old Waco 10 pilot.  Neither OX-5 nor A-40 engines had upper valve lubrication worth a damn and Mystery Oil is the answer, time honored, and older than the FAA.  These young FAA geeks are all ex-airfarce retirees and know little about older recips, just blow jobs (jets).

Do you have a favorite duplex recipe for 50-70 or 45-70?

I have a 50/70 rolling block which is one of those weak old black powder actions, so I shoot black in it. My load is 425gr. GG a priming charge of 33gr. IMR 4198 and .05 gr. FG . It is very accruate with a velocity avg. of 1450 fps.

Mr. Babbits, I haven't heard that phrase for decades. One of my dad's favorites, it was.
Coljimmy, I never heard a jet referred to by that phrase. Learned a new one there.
Thanks guys.

Did I read that correctly, 33 grain "priming" charge withi .05 grain of Fg?

KenHo, yes you read it correctly. I was trying to poke some fun at the black only crowd by keeping the load a black powder load with a large smokeless priming charge and also be helpful to the gentlemen who inquired about smokeless loads. My rifle is a 50-70 Rem rb, I started at 28gr. 4198 and the group was not great so I went to 29gr., it improved. I worked up 1gr. at a time until  I got groups from 3/4 to 1 1/2 at 100 yds. , velocity was about right at 1450 avg.

Thanks for the confirmation - yep, just a good smokeless load, but it DOES have "holly black" in it Smiley
