Opinions on Custom Single Shot Rifle Makers

Hello all,

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I am interested in a custom single shot rifle - cartridge TBD, but I am looking to build a rifle around cartridge .30cal or under capable of propelling bullets with a good ballistic coefficient, driven at subsonic velocities.  Straight wall cases appeal, and I am mulling over the Stevens .25-21, .270 Ren, and some of the obsolete .22 straight-walled centerfires.

In my searching I have come across CPA and Fenris Wolf.  These are toward the top of the potential budget.  I am wondering what people think of the two makers' rifles.  Aslo interested in potential alternative makers that would be in the sale price range ~ $2,500.  I am open to makers in Canada and the U.S.

Thanks so much,

John

I second the choice of CPA for the action. You can't do any better.

Barrels? There are plenty of good ones out there. I'm partial to Douglas myself.

Get a RKS gain twist barrel blank from Ron Smith and get CPA to do the barrel profiling and chambering on one of their Stevens 44 1/2 actions (if you are an American).

Select your desired chamber and length of bullet you wish to use and Ron will provide you with the perfect twist for your barrel blank.

If you are Canadian; purchase a CPA action and wood, and get Ron to gunsmith the rifle; and get Holden Precision to do the rust bluing and finishing of the wood.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I am in Canada.

Are Ron's barrels that much better than alternatives?  I assume that the total cost of action + wood + Ron Smith barrel and chambering + bluing will exceed the cost of a CPA.  Do you have a sense of how much the barrel, chambering, wood finishing and bluing would be?

Ok, we need full disclosure Dave.  Do you get commission or is this Canadian pride at its finest?  Cheesy

CPA makes a fine rifle (Stevens 44 1/2).
C. Sharps Arms makes a fine rifle (1879 Rem-Hepburn, 1885 Win, 1874, 1875 & 1877 Sharps).
Shiloh Sharps makes a fine rifle (1874 & 1877 Sharps).
DZ Arms makes a fine rifle (1879 Rem-Hepburn).
Steve Earle (Frank Wesson & Fraser actions) makes a fine action (don't think he builds the complete rifle).
RKS, Kreiger, Classic & Bartlein all make fine cut-rifled barrels.
Green Mountain, Douglas, Shilen, Lilja, & Hart make fine button rifled barrels.
C. Sharps will sell you a complete action that you can then have barreled with your favorite flavor of barrel.
You can shop around and likely find a .22, .25, .27 or .30cal Kreiger or Bartlein or the button-rifled barrel on someone's shelf (including the manufacturer). Less likely with RKS as his is a considerably smaller shop.
Lots of choices.
Enjoy!!

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

Dave, Now you are fully disclosed.  Grin  I know Ron is a very generous supporter donating lots of barrels.  I have a few myself and recommend him when ever asked for a suggestion.

You could also order a barrel directly from Ron Smith and have him send it directly to CPA.  My new CPA has an RKS barrel that they put on.

Ron did that at least twice for me to Meacham and John King. had

I get no commission Bob.

However I have been quite fortunate to win a number of RKS barrels in competitions. Ron Smith has sponsored many single shot competitions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

And since there are ten times as many Americans than Canadians we have to make sure you know we exist, and that we are dam proud of being Canadian.

We have to blow our own horn.

You're doing a good job, Dave.  Wink

Maybe we should reconstitute the old BP LR Pig Wars Trophy?  Canada would dominate with their wringers  Cry, the RKS  grand children and their RKS Family Barrels  Cry  I think Sue Miller is the only American to ever get a Family Barrel, isn't she?   Cheesy
