How many have shot 250 with an offhand rifle?

A comment in this thread ~ (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) ~  about the Thanksgiving Match at Ben Avery in AZ got my curiosity started.  With the trend towards bench rest stocks, I am wondering how many shooters have shot a 250 with a traditionally styled schuetzen stock?

My Ballard is not easy to shoot on the bench.  The 3" ears sticking out the end of the butt stock make for some interesting adventures. The higher the angle of the range the more difficult it becomes.  Tacoma is slightly up hill and it isn't too bad, but Spokane is about twice the angle. I believe a 245 is probably the "possible" with it  at Spokane  Cry

I've shot 3 with a Traditionally Stocked off hand rifle on the bench.

Three times for me. It's a OH rifle and a BR rifle.  Got 800.00 bucks tied up in that rifle.

One at Spokane.

Joe,

Interesting set up.  Can you show some more photos of the rifle?  Is that a special rest on the lever?

Hi Dave.

Heres my Hoch set up for BR at Spokane. As Bob said, we have to shoot UP hill at Spokane. Had five days off for Christmas back in 96. Started with an action a block of wood and a barrel blank. No time to get fancy so thats what it turned out like. Used old Anschuts parts. Made my own scope blocks, and rail parts for the forestock to hold the palm rest. I made the rifle rest too. Slide is an old compound rest off a Craftsman lathe.

I see the definition of offhand rifle is a little different than I expected Smiley.  I wonder how many 250's have been shot with traditionally stocked offhand rifles?

I like your rifle Joe.  Probably one of the better $800 investments a guy could make  Cheesy

Seven for me during registered matches. Four more during practice. All with my CPA. This is my first 250, shot during practice with my 33-47.

Joe,
Is that forearm really free of the barrel except near the action?  It's a nice looking albeit specialized rifle.

The other question I was thinking about is how many of of these rifles have a through bolt for the stock?  My guess it doesn't make any difference if the stock is fitted correctly (glassed??) and tight.

The barrel touches the action only. Without sights and scope blocks, barrel is free floating. The hanger is solid hard aluminium. Six screws fasten the hanger to the front of the action. The forestock is held to the hanger with two screws and also secures the Anschutz rail. The stock is secured with a short through bolt. No bedding. Looks funny but is very simple.

Pretty sure my Cody Ballard Helm Hiwall will score a 250. Is a .32 Krag straight taper. Badger barrel.

I'm sure it'll do it. If I bring it, you can shoot it.

That's the rifle I won at Raton in 02. Also doubles as a Zimmerstutzen.

Westerner, what's that rail attached to your barrel in the previous photo?

Schuetzendave,

No through bolt on my CPA. I do check the two screws that hold the stock on before every match. I find that the top one is ever so slightly loose once in a while.

Chris.

That was the original thought  Cheesy

Guess I'm not very good at addition.  I do not really know how many I have shot. I definitely remember the first at Sherwood, Oregon at the ISSA Regional, but I do not remember the year.

I remember shooting a 249 by about .002" at Springfield, OR one spring.  Dick Spenser was shooting on the next bench at Tacoma the following month when I shot a 250. All the shots were well within center. He told me later that I said, "There is no doubt about the one" when I fired the last shot.   Grin

I did not think I had ever shot a rimfire 250 but I recently ran into a TRR match target from 2007 with one.

Seemed like they flowed like water back when I was shooting a lot and figured out the Pope Ballard's secret for giving them up  Wink
