The finish needs some more work but other than that it's done.  I'd been packing this piece of wood around for 15 or 20 years and nearly wrecked it once, thinking I might put it on a bolt action.  Glad I saved it for a higher calling.  22 rf, BRC barrel 29" long, weighs 12 lb. 9 oz.  I think it will shoot but I haven't wrung it out yet.  It's hard for me to manage off the bench so I think I'll need to make a muzzle clamp/sled set up to see what the barrel will do. I built it for offhand anyway.  Pictures don't begin to show the beauty in the wood.  It needs to be viewed in the sunlight to watch the grain dance and shimmer.

EDIT:  Thanks to all of you who posted pictures and sent PM's and emails.  It helped me a lot as I tried to get it somewhat right.

That's a beauty! Is it a CPA or original Stevens 52?

Thank you!  It's a CPA.  Thanks to CPA as well for keeping the 44 1/2 alive.

Woah.  That is a nice piece of wood.  There are lots of beautiful and fantastically figured stocks out there but that one is beautiful and interesting.  I love the small knots and figure on the bottom of the buttstock.

Beautiful rifle JS47. I agree with Joe on the checkering.

Yeah, I know.  Trouble is, my last couple of checkering jobs were a real trial.  I can't seem to keep my lines (among many other things!) straight any more. My eyes keep crossing.  I may give it a try though.  The stock does need it.  The piece of wood was cut in the 1950's and stayed in a friend's father's gunshop in Montana until '95 or so when I traded for it.  The trade was that I stocked a Mauser out of the companion piece for my buddy.  I'd hoped that he'd feel obligated for a long time.  If he did, he got over it quick.  Friends can be like that, especially in gun deals.  At least I saved the nicest piece for myself.

I don't checker anymore. Can still do it but why punish the eyes.

Tim Smith Lyon will checker it for you.

If I checkered it, would do the classic Stevens pattern and color the panels dark. For me would look fabulous. In either case it's stunning. I'll take a piece of that fudge cake too, please.   Wink
