Whitney Type II and Freund Bros. Improved Roller

There has been a great thread on the split breech Whitney roller.  I had some patent photos of the Whitney Type II and the Freund Bros. improve roller action I thought I would post.

Improved Type  II, looks a lot like the Remington except having the Whitney extractor.

How the Freund Bros. thought the rolling block should be improved on.

First the improvement seems to have more parts, lol.
I will try to post what was said in the patent later tonight, but it seems again to do with safety of the rifle in the operation of loading and unloading.  Not that I have had it happen to me yet, but when you "throw/slam" the block up behind the bullet in the chamber, the thought that the hammer might be jarred off its notch and fire before the shooter is ready.  Most of the original rolling blocks rifles have a fair strong/heavy trigger pull, but those that have single trigger rollers for silhouette/long range shooting have had the trigger lighten.  So, the chance of that happening could increase.  You will see many shooters hold the hammer with their thumb as they "ease" the block upward behind the loaded round as an added safety precaution with the Remington Rolling block action.  Also, seen some shooters "tap" the block with a mallet on a tight loaded round to make it go on into the chamber.  Again, if there was a way to load a roller, have the hammer in fire position and yet have a safety position before you are ready to fire, that would maybe be a helpful addition to the action.

I believe, I googled the U.S. patent Number (it has been a while, sorry) and then this was with the patent description along with the line drawings.

Thanks for the information.  My avatar is a Whitney Type II. I have a larger photo of it posted somewhere in the forum.  Mine has a heavy (10+ pound) trigger pull.  Found it.

Most likely your Wihitney's heavy trigger pull can be attributed to a heavy trigger return spring. Often replacing it with a lighter piano wire spring will drop it 6-7 pounds lower.
