Ideal 225415 In The Hornet

Yesterday was nice..blue skies & sunny..59 deg. and near calm conditions.  Thought it would be good day to try out the 225415 cast in an early vented block Ideal S.C.   This particular mould in one of two in my collection that drops at proper dia. and is not egg shaped..I had high accuracy hopes with this one.   Alloy is a diluted Steriotype..about in hardness like the old Lyman No.2.  Bullets were weighed and inspected & fitted with annealed Hornady G.C.  Impact coated with Neco Moly & Carnuaba wax.  Sized to .226 dia. in Corbin reloading-press type bullet reducing die.  1st. band taper-sized 3 deg. to match throat @ .224 dia.  Lyman Super Moly* lube. (I stiffen it up with Beeswax & Lanolin).
RWS brass with parchment paper wad under Fed. 205M small rifle match primer.   All charges weighed on Redding No. 2 scale.  Sinclair micrometer top on Wilson chamber-seater was used to seat bullets.    1st. driving band is fully engraved by rifling when action is closed. Rifle is a 26" oct. Shillen barreled Sharps Borchardt panneled action I have had for about 20 years now.   A Leupold 12X CPC is set up in claw mounts.  I set up on the 100yd. line.   First up was with H4227..this has long been my favorite go-to accuracy powder in this Hornet.  Loads from 7.0grs. thru 9.2grs. just did not want to group..I was puzzled on this as at least one of these combinations in the past has given some pretty impressive accuracy.  I was feeling kind of blue over this poor showing with what I figured would be an accurate bullet.  Next up was Vithavuori N110.  Charges 7.0grs. thru 7.2grs. grouped withen .625"  anything heaver & groups opened.  The old accuracy was back!  But why didn't the old standby H4227 group?  The more I learn..the more I don't know!  More testing to follow.

Most original Hornets are .223 groove dia. If your bullet casts larger than .226 and your barrel is .223, the sizing can take something out of your accuracy.

Personally, I won't shoot such a larger bullet in a .223 and wouldn't like shooting it in a .224 groove. The 225415 can produce a lot of different sizes, as cast. I would look for a 225415U to work with but, I have a 225415 that casts ,225 with 20/1. You also might try using 20/1 alloy and see if it's better or worse. It might sound to soft but, small calibers cab surprise you.

You also need to shoot many more groups with your N110 powder to see how that holds up. One other things that I'll suggest, is try pistol primers with your H4227. There are so many variables that only testing can tell you what's the best.

I have a Lyman Ideal 225415. Bought it around 1967 for a Lowall Hornet I had just built. I was not having any luck getting it to shoot. That bullet made a world of difference. Got a .225 Lube die and it was all uphill from there. Just about any load and combination shot well. I finally ended up at 9.5 Grs of 2400 . I got all excited about "K" Hornet so re-chambered it. That was a bust. It still shot well but with the same load. still have the Rifle. It was my first effort. HTH Regards, FITZ. Smiley
