32-40 Scheutzen

I thought this would be useful to some people and am curious if anyone has loaded to these specs. I want to note the low pressure of the 2015BR powder as there has been some mixed opinions about loading the 32-40 in an original low wall action. This is something I plan to build in the near future having recently purchasing a low wall action.

Interesting that they do not show any current "bulk" powder loads.  Maybe there are not any?

This book is old, my dad bought it in the 90's. Also the closest thing to the 2015br that I have found so far is accurates 2015

Wonder how come the pressure goes downusing the#1680 powder, while increasing the charge by 2 1/2 grs.?
I never used any of these powders, but I think it's a good idea that your are wise enough to ask.
May I ask, which of the low wall receivers are you using? For my own project I'd prefer one without the grooved top, and, better one of the large thread (Winder) ones. Your project, your choice, of course. Good shootin'.

I would recommend consulting with some experts which you will find on this board before chambering a low wall in 32/40.
Most important is your safety. If you double charge a round in your proposed low wall then what?

I firmly believe that with the attention to detail and the respect to our equipment and its capabilities that is characteristic of the patrons to this sport and community is more than adequate to achieve safe loads. We put a lot of faith in manufacturers that their quality control procedures are religiously followed. I won't argue that the quality of steel in the 1800s was inferior to modern steel, but modern steel isn't perfect either and accidents can happen. I've seen interesting things as a gunsmith that still make me scratch my head.

I hate to say this as I am opposed to Large cases in the Lowalls. But it has been shown that recent blowups in Original equipment Rifles starts with Barrel failure. Once the barrel fails the receiver gives up. SOooo in theory an Original Mild steel receiver with a Modern steel barrel properly chambered could in theory handle much more than the Original Mild steel barrelled Rifles. Having said this I still believe that an original Lowall receiver even one with the large barrel shank size is trouble looking for a place to happen. We also need to remember that the Winder Actions may not have had any significant Heat Treat. Not sure I am right about this but I can tell you they Machine like butter. Just my thoughts, Regards, FITZ. Smiley

I sure agree with Fitz, and wouldn't use any low wall for a conversion to .32-40.  However, if I did the job for some reason, I'd want the Winder action simply because it has the biggest dimensions of the lot. I don't think that any of 'em are stronger steel than the rest- so the more the merrier in that regard. As for the large shank barrel- I think the blowups begin with the barrel, so the thicker walls with a large shank (per caliber) would offer a tiny bit better safety. No hotrod caliber ever to be considered, either.
All said and done, the old guys used high wall for their wildcatting and varmint work. Maybe they knew something, and stayed away from the low walls wisely.

OK I know that this is probably getting old but where does Winchester get the brass balls to appropriate the 32-40. It was developed by Ballard, and if we have to give a manufacturers name it should be a Ballard 32-40. I know that this is picky and I am in the minority but I am sick of Winchester stealing credit for this cartridge.

Me too, 40-rod, I think there should be some sort of a demerit for using the term 32/40 Winchester, they had absolutely nothing to do with the development of this cartridge.  Led all

I agree, anyone who says "32-40 Winchester" should be stoned.

Shame, shame on Winchester!

Wait a minute............. who invented it?   Huh Marlin or Ballard?  Ballard was out of the picture by the time the 32-40 whatever it is, was invented.  Undecided Wasn't he?  Sad

My lowall chambered for 32-40 Marlin has a modern Douglas barrel. Been shot several bazzillion rounds with BP and smokeless. Has had one ring lapped out of the neck in the chamber. Going to shoot it a couple bazzillian more times before I kick the bucket.   : Smiley
