Hi, I have just acquired a new Hepburn that is in great condition, a real sleeper. Appears to have never been fired. No dings on the wood, perfect bore, 99% original blue and the colour case still has a coat of lacquer protecting it. Cal is .45/70 with a half round/oct 30"barrel. Early serial number 44X and the rear buckhorn sporting sight has the flat leading edge that occasionally appears on some Remington rolling blocks. Funny thing is that the tang is not drilled & tapped to take a tang sight. Is this unusual? Appears to me that this rifle was set up purely for hunting with the standard sporting sights only. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on this. I'm very, very happy with this rifle, never expected to find one in this condition out here in Australia!

Tang sight holes were not standard on any early Remingtons. It wasn't until later in production that I see most having holes, regardless of sight selection. Early Rolling Blocks, and Hepburns are more common without tang sight holes, than with, especially on standard base models.
I've contemplated D&T a few of my older Remingtons to use a tang sight for longer range work. I still haven't been able to bring myself to doing it, even though I know there's no way to determine when it was done, once it's done.

I have a late No. 1 RB sporting rifle, serial# 12,xxx, that is not drilled and tapped for a tang sight.

Nice. My 'daily driver' Hepburn in 40-65 is also marked on the right side of the receiver, which is somewhat unusual, with most being marked on the left side (including my other two). It is a serial #7xxx, so a 'later' action. Based on the lower tang screwheads, it appears to have been apart a number of times.

Thanks for that info. Interesting. As much as I prefer using tang sights (those standard barrel sights are getting harder to use every year especially on those early mornings when the deer are just starting to move) I don't think I could bring myself to D&T it. Will just have to sneak up a bit closer Wink

If you D&T for a tang sight no one but you (and the rest of us who read this thread) will ever know. Just insure you D on the original spacing & location and T with the original thread and it will be like the other 99%+ of Hepburns.

I completely agree, but still can't bring myself to doing it. I think it's that voice telling me, "What if something goes wrong, and it's not perfect?"
