Annealing Machine Update!!

I decided to modify my home built annealing machine to use one torch rather than two. Much easier to set up and much easier to control the heat on the cartridge neck.
Updated the article with pictures and videos on my web site

Roy, your thread is a perfect example of a GREAT thread for me.  I enjoy reading your article on website, and watching video of process in action.....  AND - it gets me doing a bit of research to learn more.  I've annealed brass since the '70's when I first got into reloading by standing brass in pan of water, getting to DULL red, then tipping in water.  I was always taught brass had to be quickly quenched to fully anneal - but from all my reading tonight, it doesn't seem to be so.  UNLESS - are we doing more of a "stress relieve" of the brass rather than a true "anneal" to make brass as soft as possible?

The original reason folks stood brass in water was so the head and body of the case didn't anneal and soften. Tipping the brass in water has no effect on the annealing process.

I was concerned about this with the very short 38-40 and 44-40 pistol calibers, but the aluminum disc that the brass sits on and the thick steel disc tends to draw the heat away from the base as I can hold a piece of brass by the base immediately after the neck is annealed.

How do you keep the anneal from going all the way down into the web of the case?

Two things:

a) fear - I once over annealed some 300 Win Mag cases - opened the breach - and a primer fell out - greatly expanded base.  Fortunately a Ruger #1 and had no problems.

b) attention to watching the color change creep down the case - not letting it go too far.
